Like the "To use the compiled binaries, you must own the game." here: <a href="https://github.com/electronicarts/CnC_Red_Alert/tree/main?tab=readme-ov-file#compiling-win32-only" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/electronicarts/CnC_</span><span class="invisible">Red_Alert/tree/main?tab=readme-ov-file#compiling-win32-only</span></a><br>Or the extra clauses in the LICENSE.md. Both might be <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/GPL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GPL</span></a> incompatible? Also for both this C&amp;C release and <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/OpenRA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenRA</span></a> assets are not freely licensed.<br>In contrast, for <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Warzone2100" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Warzone2100</span></a>, <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/0ad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>0ad</span></a> and <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/7kaa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>7kaa</span></a> are fully freely licensed. So I can directly install them on Debian.</p>

But it also makes it pretty unique.<br>Friends of mine are big fans of <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/0ad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>0ad</span></a>. Great soundtrack + graphics, big variety of peoples to try. But is also more resource hungry. <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Warzone2100" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Warzone2100</span></a> was probably pretty resource optimized back then already, as it had to run on the PlayStation 1, too. And now allows huge battles.</p>

I think wz + 7kaa could be particularly interesting for a vid bc. of their history. When we got our first family PC I also got a games collection, which had both the original C&amp;C and 7kaa. So I got super excited when I discovered a few years ago that 7kaa got opensourced. Gameplay-wise wz is my fav. though, love the huge tech-tree.<br><a href="https://chaos.social/tags/RTS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RTS</span></a> <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/LinuxGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxGaming</span></a></p>

War früher mal closed source, gab es auch für die <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Playstation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Playstation</span></a>. For Warzone and 7kaa I find their history very interesting, they were commercial, closed-source games originally.</p><p>And <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/OpenRA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenRA</span></a>, if that counts. At least its engine is <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a>. And it uses the original, non-free textures and sound files from <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Dune" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dune</span></a> and <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/CommandAndConquer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CommandAndConquer</span></a> <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/CnC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CnC</span></a>.</p><p>And wow, <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Mindustry" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mindustry</span></a> looks great, didn't know about it until now and will definitely need to try it :-).</p>
