If there was anybody competent in charge in Europe we would be passing emergency legislation this week so that starting next week we poach every scientist from the US who was previously funded by NSF, NIH etc. Oh well, we can dream.

@flippac @julesh That's the problem... how do you know who you are getting? I know now my countrymen are capable of things I supposed were long in the past. Are we doomed to repeat our mistakes until no one is around to repeat them?

@profdc9 @julesh tbf I was specifically commenting on who Operation Paperclip and its counterparts were recruiting, but there are plenty of sciences where that's less of a problem so long as they don't become culturally dominant here

julesh

@flippac @profdc9 You seem to be confusing the situation in ~1933 (when everyone was trying to get people out of Germany by whatever means they could, and scientists had more resources than most people to do so) with the situation in ~1946 (when the USA and USSR were fighting each other over the spoils of victory)

@julesh @flippac The rest of the world has no sympathy for America or Americans. We did this to ourselves out of ignorance and spite. We are different than Germany in that we are not recovering from devastating war and depression; we have the advantages and we are squandering them. The public is brainwashed by a corrupt, compliant media owned by billionaires. Our politicians subvert democracy to remain in office. No one is going to be saving the scientists or anyone else.

@profdc9 @julesh I'm just going to note here that you're responding to a corner of fedi that has a lot more people already being targeted in it, and that some of us were paying attention from that perspective last time TFG got in.

I'm not in any position myself, but there's a little more will here than elsewhere because we know full well what choices our friends didn't have.

@flippac @julesh I know that some mean well, but the USA is a nation of 340 million and the most powerful military with a large nuclear arsenal. Many will already be predisposed to dislike Americans, and not many will want to enrage a belligerent America.

@profdc9 @julesh Oh, there's no way most people're getting out of there. It just doesn't work like that, nukes or no.

The fact the US has effectively been funding a military sized for fighting the entire of the rest of the planet for as long as it has sure is telling, though.

@julesh @profdc9 I wasn't the first to mention Paperclip (albeit reversed)! Though that in particular (and the UK's equivalent for that matter) was '45.

And yes, this is a '33 situation.
