@donray @mekkaokereke I am still blown away that anyone would mass plant eucalypts like they have. I'm Aussie, and stuffing around with eucalypts and not doing enough controlled burns is a recipe for disaster. We still don't do enough, but I don't understand doing so little. There are rules in rural areas here on keeping areas clear near homes and building standards on fire-proofing. Eucalypts are a fact of life here, and necessary for wildlife, our very own oil-filled exploding trees. :/

The story told 'round these parts (SF Bay Area) was that eucalyptus was brought in as wind breaks and later a cash crop.

It's terrible for both of those things, by the way, but by the time folk figured that out, it had already (quite literally) taken root.

FWIW they scare the hell out of me. I've seen those things burn and they're asshole trees. When they burn, they send jets of fire out to set other trees on fire.

KQED · Eucalyptus: How California's Most Hated Tree Took RootDepending on whom you ask, eucalyptus trees are either an icon in California or a fire-prone scourge.

@jrconlin @donray @mekkaokereke yep, embers - they are fore trees, adapted to burn to encourage their seedlings. Gums and wattles need fire the germinate. That's why the seedpods in gums are so dense.

@jrconlin @donray @mekkaokereke omg windbreak??? Told my partner about yhat and they laughed. Truely mind-blowing silliness by whoever was trying to use them that way. High wind causes limbs to drop everywhere - huge cleanups here after high wind storms
