Colin the Mathmo

One thing no one ever talks about being an adult is how much time you debate yourself on keeping a cardboard box because it's, like, a really good box.

@ColinTheMathmo

This is currently taking up too much space in my "office", because it's a *really* good box (my Italian wholesaler used it to package a load of food last Monday)

I mean, look at it! That's a *box*.

@neonsnake Does your office have a cat to do it justice?

@irina unfortunately not! Closest I have is next door's cat, who I feed when they're away and therefore had decided that my garden belongs to him as well!

@neonsnake You can put your box in the garden and see if it attracts the cat!

@ColinTheMathmo

"I can't recycle that one yet. What if the kit breaks and I have to send it back? Etc"

@ColinTheMathmo „a“?

That's what cupboards are made for: storing cardboxes on top.

@ColinTheMathmo I save the good ones I get for my cats, and they're not too fussed on the size 🐱🐱

@ColinTheMathmo
I keep box for a while, then get rid of box to clear the clutter, then mourn loss of box. it's a vicious cycle.

@ColinTheMathmo I mean...you might move or have to send it back for service/replacement at some point in the next decade.

@ColinTheMathmo

Flat pack it, and file it. Otherwise the moment you throw it, 24 hours later, you'll need it.

@ColinTheMathmo

We always have some good cardboard boxes at hand in the house. There is no debate about this.

@ColinTheMathmo

And jars. So many nice, potentially useful jars 🤣

@ColinTheMathmo 😂 resist temptation and recycle ♻️ it! My wife and I have been working through nearly 40 years of stuff ( and some things that were from school years so even older) donating, freecycling and selling on well known platform as we were downsizing but decided to stay in our home of over 27yrs but still getting rid of stuff and the cardboard boxes that we hadn’t used 👍🏻 it’s really good for you 😊

@ColinTheMathmo I feel seen 🙄👀🫣
We moved out of our house (13 years there) and I had to have the *perfect* box for everything I was saving (too much stuff is still in storage 😱🤷‍♀️

@ColinTheMathmo I end up leaving the box around for a few days for my cat to enjoy before I break it down and recycle

@ColinTheMathmo

I would say I am seen, but..

...I don't debate. I just keep. 😂

Oh ok, eventually we break down most of the boxes and I haul them off to the recycling site, but keep a few because they're useful for shipping stuff or storing stuff in the garage.

@ColinTheMathmo Boxes that I like get chucked out pretty regularly. If the cat likes it though, it’ll be here for months…

@ColinTheMathmo I have at least 12 cardboard boxes at home right now that I really do not need but I am convinced I should keep because they're good boxes.

@ColinTheMathmo There's no debate -- you always keep the box! 😂

@ColinTheMathmo I have a cardboard box that's now 30 years old. It's a really good box.

@ColinTheMathmo my time-saving secret: I don't debate myself, I just keep a stash of (folded-flat) cardboard boxes in my basement.

@ColinTheMathmo I feel so seen. I've also been known to order takeout from a place that isn't quite as good as their competitor because it comes in such a good shopping bag with those smooth, thick rope handles.

@ColinTheMathmo Bwahahahahahahaha I laugh because this, is, so, true! I've lived this more times than I can count. And when I break down boxes to go to recycling it still makes my heart sad somehow. 🤣😁

@ColinTheMathmo @handmade_ghost Even if I talk myself into throwing it out my kids are like “are you sure? That’s a really good box”

@ColinTheMathmo The decision is much easier to make if you have cats.

@ColinTheMathmo And you never really know when you'll need to move, and that was a sturdy box!

@ColinTheMathmo when you get a tablet or some other fancy thing that comes in a REALLY sturdy box and you're like "shit i could be storing stuff in this"

@ColinTheMathmo shit, my kid is an adult and she is 9.

i have to talk her to surrender cardboard boxes for recycling almost weekly cause they pile up in her room (she is trash-crafter).

@ColinTheMathmo but tbh i usually let her keep the Really Good Boxes cause i too can appreciate finer things in life.

@ColinTheMathmo “that is some good cardboard. I could turn it into a protest sign, or I could use it to protect a surface when I paint something. I could use it to store or transport something. I could draw animals on it with marker”

@ColinTheMathmo Anyone with a cat needs no reason to keep the box.

@ColinTheMathmo and there's the other adult phase in which you know that you really like it, but you just throw it immediately (I think this only apply to people with small/medium house)

@ColinTheMathmo "but there's nothing wrong with it" has become a saying in our household, applicable to any item that you should so obviously just throw away

@ColinTheMathmo lol. I’m getting ready to move in 2 months so I finally have a valid reason for hoarding them.

@ColinTheMathmo my cat gets the final say on the qualities of a box.
