I have someone asking me to help with a PolaRx5 #GNSS that can only send observations (via satellite) using FTP (!). No one here at #UVic wants to set up an #FTP server. I don't want to. It would be attacked relentlessly.

Apparently the device can be polled from here over ssh: it's not going to have static IP. The user is going to use #Starlink (not my choice). Does dynamic DNS work with that service?

Battery power at the site limits options quite a bit as well.

Suggestions? Ideas?

I finally found some time to finish my March weather summary for #UVic, and to post the Month in a Minute sky video.

The big problem I face is that my oldest weather station site, the ISC at UVic is going to go offline soonish. They are demolishing the site to make way for new housing. The site I will be relying on going forward is on BWC. It's quite different from ISC. I'll be working on some kind of characterisation of the differences in the coming months.

I'm reading student essays today. What is encouraging is that so far I believe it's very clear they are indeed writing these themselves!

Also today, I completed a survey at work about the use of 'AI' in teaching. It seems to me that the perspective of the people who created the survey was not as critical or even neutral as it should be. My answers will, I hope, inject some realistic concerns into the discussion.

I have more papers to read. Back to it. #UVic

#Radon has been in the news again in #Canada. It's something that's easy to test for, and remediation is not difficult. Though the risk is small in my region (Pacific Coastal) I bought a test kit to measure levels in my home.

The result is here: 60 Bq/m^3.

This is above average for my region (24 Bq/m^3), but below the guideline levels (100–200 Bq/m^3 depending on which authority one uses).

The minimum temperature at #UVic this morning was 10.4 °C. This is the first time since 2002 that I have observed a minimum above 10 °C in March here.

The forecast looks promising for tomorrow and Wednesday, in terms of temperature. The image shows an ensemble of forecast models agreeing that the lower atmosphere will warm up (over YVR).

One of my favourite classes in my Master of #CommunityDevelopment program at #UVic was the one about strategic communication. The principles behind the concepts we studied in that class is something that I can't stop seeing in all sorts of types of communication, and I love pointing out when I see good examples of it.

Today's example is from the Evo Car Share service's announcement that they were correcting something as a result of customer feedback.
