Today's historic photo of the day: Works #tram no 10W is the brightest coloured thing in the scene on a winters' day as it turns from Peel Street into William Street, Melbourne, Vic, July 1 1989.

Works trams are no longer seen in Melbourne, but until about 2002 there was a small fleet of these non passenger carrying trams that were used for tasks such as carrying materials between depots, grinding the rails and as in this case, cleaning (or scrubbing) the tracks free of mud, leaves and debris.

A bright yellow liveried single truck tram in the distance approaches a shallow left hand curve. The weather is an overcast and wintry day with the trees lining the city streets having largely lost their leaves. A handful of cars are travelling along the wide street, and there are many cars parked on the sides of the streets.

This is one of the main avenues of #Magdeburg, Breiter Weg, with the #GrüneZitadelle ("Green Citadel") by #Hundertwasser.

I did a sightseeing tour in a double decker bus with kiddo yesterday (an Easter gift) and of course this was one of the attractions - the trees of the #building are getting greener and greener, I must come back soon and show you! 😊

A vibrant, quirky pink building, the Grüne Zitadelle (Green Citadel), dominates the right side of the frame under a bright blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. Its undulating facade features numerous irregularly shaped windows and golden onion domes atop its towers. Trees with bare branches peek out from behind and on top of the building. To the left, a more conventional yellow and grey apartment building stands in contrast. A grassy tramway track runs across the foreground, flanked by a grey pavement and a road with white lane markings. Several people are visible walking along the pavement and crossing the tram tracks. Parking signs are visible near the Grüne Zitadelle. Overhead tram wires crisscross the sky.

I should add that Z-class trams are not particularly amazing vehicles by modern standards, BUT they were significant because their construction signalled the moment you could be sure that Melbourne's tram network was going to survive the post-war abandonment of trams in Australia, UK, USA etc. Phew. Thanks, Z-class.

@vcdnrw Ich finde, das #Deutschlandticket hat einen fairen Preis für mich. Wenn ich mir allerdings die Katastrophe im VGF und RMV ärgert mich das um so mehr, dass die für die Pendel-Strecke (!) normal 120,- im Monat haben wollen: Nix geht (Ausfälle im Netz, Taktung) und andere Städte (#München) machen es wesentlich besser und effizienter. Die Verantwortlichen sollten dafür auch Konsequenzen spüren. So eine Zumutung im ÖPNV. #Frankfurt #Tram #sbahn #bus #chaos

Today's historic photo of the day: Melbourne Z3 class #tram 145 on route 75 from City to East Burwood runs east along Riversdale Road at Loch Street, Hawthorn East, Vic, early/mid 1986.

Hawthorn East is in Melbourne's eastern suburbs about 9km from the city. This section of track is served by two routes: 70 and 75. Route 75 branches south-east at Camberwell Junction, which is just a couple of stops ahead of the tram in this photo, whilst route 70 continues along Riversdale Rd to Wattle Park.
