Is there a modern Clock / Alarms app anyone can 100% vouch for wont have its background service nuked on #android ?
Havent found any that request this Alarms & Reminders "special app access" (attached image)
#foss #fossify / SimpleMobileTools Clocks seems to have failed me (or I didnt wake??)
#fossdroid #android #floss #degoogle #freesoftware #SimpleMobileTools #fdroid #alarmclock #androidbattery #batterylife
The irony of needing something to not fall asleep so I can wake up.
Wow, looks like someone picked up the ball with #SimpleMobileTools — a decent suite of Android apps:
https://www.fossify.org/about/
(And they are using fscking WebPee images on their website! Well, what did I expect, they are Android app developers, once you dabble in cancer, you might as well go all the way)
Today #freesoftware let me down.
I just ran into a bug on my phone while trying to call emergency services.
I'm running the #microg build of #LineageOS on my #fairphone3 and am using the #simplemobiletools Dialer app. After calling 110 (German emergency services), the phone app kept crashing in a loop.
Software has bugs and I'm not blaming the developers, but if bugs happen in such critical situations, it is not acceptable :(
Who do I need to give money to to prevent such things in future?
@FrugalGamer
#SimpleMobileTools was long taken over by some other company. Please don't install any of their Apps, even from #F-droid. They no longer maintain those apps. Alternatively, you can install it's fork, available on #F-droid, called #fossify Apps.
https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Calendar/pull/200
So schreckt man potenzielle Helfer ab
Remember the "Simple Mobile Tools" suite of Android apps? It used to be a great collection of basic apps that didn't slurp up your data, clog up your apps with advertising, or charge exorbitant prices. It isn't anymore.
At the end of 2023, the suite was sold to ZipoApps, who proceeded to do all of those things. (This appears to be their business model: buy an app with a large install base and squeeze every last bit of monetization out of it while destroying its usefulness, fun, and credibility.)
Seriously: They replaced the $2.99 one-time payment for the Pro version of Calendar with a $15/week subscription.
Fortunately the apps were all GPL, and there's a complete fork called Fossify. They're still slowly rolling apps out to F-Droid and Google Play, with about 10 out so far.
I use the calendar and contacts apps all the time, and the voice recorder is good for taking quick notes. I've also used the files, gallery and music player apps occasionally, but not enough to have a solid impression of them, and I haven't yet tried the phone or SMS apps.

Got through some Aurora Store installed apps update. Remembered the #SimpleMobileTools (that I fortunately installed through F-Droid) were sold. Saw that I still had Recorder. Scrolled down to recent user reviews.
HAPPY I QUIT IT ALL EVEN HAPPIER #FOSSIFY PUBLISHED A RECORDER FORK
Welche mittelkomplexen FOSS-Dateimanager könnt Ihr für #Android empfehlen?
(also was zwischen #Fossify (ehemals #SimpleMobileTools ) und #GhostCommander )
Good grief! I noticed that the Fossify Calendar and File Manager had made it to Google Play, and also noticed that the reviews for the old Simple Calendar were tanking...
The top one was this:
It originally said there would be a one-time payment of 2.99 after the free trial. I thought I'd gladly pay that so I continued to use it. When the trial was up I was given the option to buy not for the single payment of 2.99 but for $15/week! The app itself is exactly what I want over other calendars I've tried. And I would pay for adless, but over $2/day is insane. Banner ads would be tolerable but it has video ads when opening the app and adding an event. Wish I'd read the reviews.
(Emphasis added.) Before the sale, Simple Mobile Calendar did in fact have a single one-time payment option of around $2.99.
The company replied:
Sorry to hear that the price for the Premium subscription seems high to you. Please, note that the App on the Premium version opens up many exciting features and opportunities for you and it is definitely worth the price. The Premium version has no ads. Thank you!
"Seems" high"? $15/week for a simple calendar is exorbitant.
Video adds on a basic tool are insane.
I am so glad I uninstalled all of the ones I was using, and started replacing them with the Fossify fork!
Meanwhile, the Fossify apps are continuing to roll out on F-Droid, with the Contacts, Phone (dialer) and SMS Messenger now available as well.
