In case you missed it, on Monday I was able to successfully send a newsletter from my self-hosted, manually installed #Ghost blog. So it appears to be fully working now.

I don't have any new #selfhosting anecdotes to share. I thought I would be able to relax for a bit and enjoy this milestone. I spent the day yesterday writing a blog post for #TheFutureIsFederated on the topic of resistance to the digital coup.

In the meantime, my 4-year-old spotted some vintage #LEGO panels in the attic. I identified them as belonging to LEGO's King Castle and she demanded I "BUILD IT RIGHT NOW." I'm not even sure I have all the pieces required... I remember that a couple of years ago I found stacks of old LEGO boxes and organized pieces by color in transparent drawers. I found an old manual online for the castle set and so far so good (sort of). I made it to step 10 out of 43. The real test will be building the retractable bridge.

All this to say: no more self-hosting adventures for me this week, I'll be tackling a complex LEGO project (and I can't use code to get out of hurdles...)

I saw today that my CoCalc (https://cocalc.com/) license was about to renew. I've been meaning to move to a more #SelfHosting or #P2P paradigm, so this was good timing for me to cancel. I left this message when doing so:

"I want to support Sage, and I like using CoCalc, but I don't want to put money towards a service that supports Microsoft, Amazon, or OpenAI in any way. I didn't care so much about this before, and I even log in to CoCalc with a GitHub account, but I'm tired of having my work scraped for profit by people who donate to fascists who are destroying my nation. I would consider returning if all ties to these corporations were cut and cloud computing services came from responsible companies, perhaps in the EU."

I'm pretty sure I already have backups of everything I want from GitHub, so I can be done with them too. I should have quit when Microsoft first arrived. My plan is to switch to Radicle (https://radicle.xyz/) rather than another centralized service. I'll be sure to post about how that goes.

I don't think self hosting a personal matrix server is for me anymore. I'm going back to my matrix•org server for now. I didn't really use it in a way that I thought benefited enough to justify keeping up with hosting it. Besides from what I can tell conduwuit is no more? Oh well, again not worth the effort for me right now.

It was very difficult to come up with a modern design for a weather service. A lot of work that just takes time! Time that I don't really have, as I am busy with many other things in my autistic life.

I have been thinking for a few days if I should make the design simple instead. One-column, which is most likely much easier to handle. What do you think about that?

What's the least #evil #DNS provider?

I've put some of my properties on #Cloudflare, and I can still hear the boo's.
#Google cloud DNS and #AWS are no better.

I can put #Bind9 on my own #FOSS stacks, but I probably lack the uptime for reliability.

I'm moving away from my CPanel provider into my own #Selfhosting on a #VPS.

I'm thinking one NS on something reliable and one on my own stack.

My home computers are connected through a router and, although they're clearly using NAT through said router for IPv4, they appear to all have outside IPv6 addresses. Are those addresses directly accessible from outside? When adding AAAA records to my outside DNS zones, should they point to my router's address, or the target machine's?

I just learned that b2evolution is being sunset, and after poling around I came across Jcow.

It seems to have the features I'm looking for to replace a Facebook Group, however, its paid software and wondering if anyone here have used it in the past.

Hello my name is Elena and I'm addicted to #selfhosting.

2 MINUTES after receiving confirmation that my self-hosted Ghost blog is finally working perfectly (newsletter sending included) - something that took 84 DAYS of trial and error and troubleshooting - I've started thinking: "what now?"

Could I be... bored?

Yes.

In a way having a running list of problems to fix was keeping me distracted (by the world at large) and somewhat entertained.

Thank goodness I have another big self-hosting project coming up: #PeerTube.

But maybe I should enjoy this BIG accomplishment for like 5 minutes... or a couple of weeks. No point in installing PeerTube while my 4-year-old has just started a 14 day school holiday. My parents are a huge help but I am basically getting interrupted every 10 minutes... so I can't really dive into something complex

Guess what? The amazing blogging platform #Ghost has just released an update which adds new features: https://ghost.org/changelog/custom-content-for-every-subscriber/

I am about to update my Ghost installation FOR THE FIRST TIME using command lines - aaaaaarghhhhhhh. Not gonna lie, my heart is beating fast.

But first! I'm taking a snapshot of the whole VPS in case something goes wrong.

As usual, wish me luck ​

Update: my wireless mouse just drained its battery and became unresponsive. It's an Apple mouse with the charging port at the bottom. So I will have to recharge it a bit and carry on with the update later. There's no way I will do it now with a 1% mouse battery level - in case anything goes wrong
