Is this the America we want?

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in September of 1973. Section 504 of that act codified the civil rights of persons with disabilities. “No otherwise qualified individual” can be, simply because of their disability, “denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination" in any program or activity that receives federal funds.

Now 16 states have joined Texas in a lawsuit asking the court to declare Section 504 unconstitutional.

Hey you know that celebrating I was doing this morning about how I finally got Concord Hospital to turn down the hold music at the call center so I can call my doctor without getting PEM or a migraine?

It was only because of this. Because of section 504 of the rehabilitation act of 1970 something. I’m so happy I found a new office to harass about that so I could finally get that done before they take it away.

For real though we can’t let this happen, this is how I keep unmasked plumbers out of my home. I live in a housing complex that is mostly federally funded and I’m a disabled person and I have a right to not contract diseases.

Wet-Dry WorldRiptide (@RiptideAtlantic@wetdry.world)Absolutely unacceptable. 17 states are suing the U.S. Government to get rid of section 504, which provides protection against discrimination for disabled people, including those with mental disabilities (myself included) like ADHD. There's absolutely no reason to get rid of these protections. If you live in any of the states below, PLEASE contact your Attorney General and help convince them to drop the suit. States who are suing: Alaska Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Indiana Iowa Kansas Louisiana Missouri Montana Nebraska South Carolina South Dakota Texas Utah West Virginia

Here's a court case that you should be aware of if you live in the USA. 17 Republican controlled states, led by Texas, of course, are suing the Federal government to have the courts throw out a law the requires people receiving Federal funds to not discriminate against disabled people. That's right - the Republicans want to make discrimination against the disabled legal.

This site tells you how to fight against this.

Drunk History's hilarious reenactment of the Section 504 sit-in, which eventually led to the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), which was passed on this day in 1990.

Don't forget, rights are rarely "granted" by asking politely; they must be fought for. As far as those in power are concerned (Cis, White, Rich Men) if it's not a problem for THEM, it's not a problem.

Watch this short documentary with vintage 1970s news footage about Judith Heumann and many others struggling to get Section 504--which was already U.S. federal law--to actually get enforced.

Cringe at the terms used in the 1970s to describe people with disabilities...
