EurekAlert!Newly published study reveals diversity of novel hydrothermal vent styles on the Arctic Ocean floorA new study about Earth’s northernmost seafloor hydrothermal system shows even more variety in vent styles than previously thought. •             The study has important implications for understanding the origin of these vents and assessing their global-scale impact on the Earth-Ocean system. •             The study also has implications for understanding and searching for habitable environments, and potentially even life on other ocean worlds in our outer solar system, according to the study’s authors. •             The surprising results found from detailed deep-ocean studies at Polaris call into question how much we really know about the nature of seafloor venting along all ultra-slow spreading ridges on Earth which remain largely unexplored but make up 25% of the global ridge crest.

#Searobin has fascinated scientists for decades. It has body of a fish, wings of a bird and legs of a crab. When researchers analyzed molecules responsible for the ability to find food in sand, they found sea robin’s shovel-shaped legs were covered in little protrusions similar to the papillae on your tongue. It’s as if they #taste their prey from above the sand before digging it up.

New paper!
We usually think of #sediment getting finer as we move away from the shore. But, when biogenic and oceanographic factors come into play in the #mesophotic zone, the patterns could be quite different.
I'm really happy with how this paper came out. It's a very holistic view of how sedimentary #facies are actually distributed, with #seafloor photography, acoustic imaging, sampling, quantitative thin section analysis, and #multivariant statistics.
