A quotation from Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Categorizing is necessary for humans, but it becomes pathological when the category is seen as definitive, preventing people from considering the fuzziness of boundaries, let alone revising their categories.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist
The Black Swan, Part 1, ch. 1 “The Apprenticeship of an Empirical Skeptic” (2007)

[Wolfgang] Pauli…sought a positive way of expressing the irrational, which in itself represents a term that is defined by what it is not. … He stated that because the models of science necessarily build on the possibility of making general statements; they are dependent on testability by repetition. This, of course, excludes from the very beginning any reference to something unique. Pauli’s goal was to find his way to a worldview that was open enough to include the irrational, a model of reality that could actually incorporate the qualitatively unique.

the essential #psychological failure of #toxicIdealism is as follows:

if one can justify a position inside the ivory tower mind palace of one's self-regard, then that is "morality"

no, it's #ego masturbation

true #morality is action, even if it is messy

but they value the purity of themselves, over actually mattering to the world

the real world is too messy, they can't be bothered with messiness

ego over #reality

Even in politics, clarity matters. Lies depend on confusion. #Truth shines without force. So we organise, vote, protest, care for each other, educate, & stay grounded in #Compassion & #Reality. We don’t fall into despair. Because every moment we live openly, without fear, is one they cannot control. (4/4)

Tech pioneer #JaronLanier argues for a different way to think about #ai One thing I worry about is AI accelerating a trend that digital tech in general — and #socialmedia in particular — has already started, which is to pull us away from the physical world and encourage us to constantly perform versions of ourselves in the virtual world (#avatars). We need a business model for #civilization that isn’t self-destructive.

Democracy and the rule of law are threatened without an agreement between government and its citizens on the objectivity of truth and reality. A breakdown in this agreement puts the definition of truth and reality into the hands of those with the most social, political, and/or economic power.

Funny how I have trans friends of all varieties and have never been chastised or canceled for mistakenly getting pronouns wrong, and have plenty of vegan friends and have never been lectured about my own eating habits nor canceled, and have lots of friends who drive hybrids and EVs and have never been shamed for what I drive. It's almost like that monolithic uptight left you see everywhere in the panicfuel media outlets is just made-up bullshit to suit their PR angle.

UAW member Sean Crawford of Warren, Michigan spoke on his break at GM plant about his Labor Notes article on tariffs, healthcare and international labor solidarity. It’s the capitalists, the auto factory owners and others who have sent jobs abroad. There is no current preparation to build factories for “returning” jobs.
