1/ « We need to understand the origins of the Trump blitzkrieg to #counter it in the US and #prevent it from spreading abroad. The speed of the attack can be traced to Trump strategist and “accelerationist” Steve Bannon, and aligns with his information warfare tactic to “flood the zone” to #confuse, #disengage and #disorient. Whether on climate or Covid, rumours, lies and conspiracy theories create a chaotic #cacophony, leaving the public disoriented, fearful and prey to oversimple Trumpist messages: blame the woke, migrants, transgender people, Muslims, doctors, scientists. Musk’s purchase of Twitter/X supports Bannon’s agenda. » ⤵️

The Guardian · Trump and Musk have ushered in the era of cataclysm capitalism. But I have a plan to counter itBy Julia Steinberger

This is sounding like some Slow Horses level of Clown Fuckery.
They misspelled Rudakubana's name wrong then closed his file.

Ah, the movie "Brazil", that's what this reminds me of, a very British Dystopian vision that...

The Guardian · Prevent chief departs after damning inquiry over Southport attackBy Aletha Adu
Continued thread

People aren't typically referred to Prevent because they've committed a crime, rather due to a speculative risk of 'radicalisation'. The reality is, many Prevent referrals are based on gut instinct, rather than concrete evidence.

BUT also from public sector workers who believe a child needs additional support.

Why should kids have to be considered at risk of becoming a terrorist to get help?

The processing of data under #Prevent is neither proportionate nor necessary when 87% of referrals end with no action.

Yet organisations rely on national security or law enforcement exemptions to #dataprotection, which aren't valid when there's no criminal activity.

Referrals are often driven by a lack of other safeguarding support – ‘Vulnerability present but no ideology or risk’ was the largest category of referrals (36%) in 23/24.

Open Rights GroupPrevent: Thousands of children referred to counter terrorism programme last yearThe Home Office has published its latest Prevent referral figures, which show a slight increase in the rise in referrals compared to last year.

This report by Rights & Security International is more evidence of the long-term harms caused by data collection under the #Prevent programme (UK).

Children form the majority of referrals, resulting in:

🔴 Data could be shared without consent.
🔴 Right to erasure readily disregarded.
🔴 Right to object or change data made too onerous.
🔴 Shared with children’s services and retained for 25 years after their 18th birthday.

The UK government's plans to double-down on the Prevent programme will escalate "the discriminatory over-policing of young people, especially those from minoritised groups."

The impact on people's lives is disproportionate, as their data is held and shared for years even when no action is taken.

ORG kicked off 2024 with our report into the Prevent programme.

We revealed that the data of people who are referred to Prevent is shared widely and kept for years, even when no action is required.

We call for an end to Prevent.
