Manveer Munde, Principal Consultant, reflects on his time working in hands-on materials testing in our latest blog. Looking at the powerful synergy between hands-on experimentation and computational modelling — where physical testing informs digital simulation, and high-performance computing pushes the boundaries of both.

Where did your career in HPC start?

We are contributing to the design and implementation of the PMDcore ontology, focussed to represent the entire domain of materials science - as well as to MatWerk Ontology, which is based on NFDIcore ontology (also provided by our group) to represent research data from the NFDI-MatWerk consortium. All ontologies are BFO2020-compliant.

Welded joints in gas transport pipelines must always be meticulously evaluated with respect to structural integrity, particularly in the presence of pressurized hydrogen gas. This is the primary focus of the HyLINE II project, where we address various aspects of hydrogen and material interactions both experimentally and numerically. These include hydrogen diffusion and trapping, the influence of microstructural features on crack initiation and growth, fracture and fatigue properties, and the transferability between lab-scale and industrial applications. The meeting commenced with a visit to SINTEF's new national SMART-H test lab for mechanical testing under pressurized hydrogen gas, where we are currently performing fracture toughness testing. The project are very grateful to our Japanese research partner from Kyushu University, represented by Professor Hisao Matsunaga, and the collaborating Fukuoka University represented by Professor Junichiro Yamabe, for visiting Trondheim and presenting their recent research findings.
