A hermit crab stack. Two grainy-hand hermits below and a little hairy hermit on top. The one on the bottom never seems to mind the weight; the shells they wear aren't compressible. VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit #Eelgrass
Hermit crabs are good climbers. They like high places where they can sit and watch the world go by. Here, a little one climbs the eelgrass. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit #Eelgrass

It’s heroic, hardy and less than a millimetre long: meet the 2025 invertebrate of the year.
If you’re seeking inspiration from a figure of strength who is also strangely cute then look no further than the winner of 2025: Milnesium tardigradum, a microscopic multisegmented animal that resembles a piglet wrapped in an enormous duvet.
For 13 years, I maintained an invertebrates aquarium, housing only small critters from local intertidal zones. 13 years! In the aftermath of Covid, I had to give it up. It's been two years now, and I miss my critters, especially the hermit crabs. So I've decided to do a Daily Hermit post here, using photos of those glorious years. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #DailyHermit

I found a tiny snail friend hiding in the new Hydrangea leaves.

I keep pet woodlice and I've been testing what food they like to eat, and so far, they've gobbled up courgette and cabbage, but not really interested in celery leaves or lettuce. They eat dead leaves and whatnot but they don't show the same level of enthusiasm as they do to courgette and cabbage...Interesting...
