#HappyBirthday to Elijah McCoy, the real McCoy behind the phrase "The Real McCoy". McCoy was born May 2nd, 1844, in Colchester, Ontario, to George and Mildred Goins McCoy. At the time, they were fugitive slaves who had escaped from Kentucky to Ontario via helpers through the Underground Railroad. He was trained in Scotland as an engineer and would hold 57 patents for new inventions at the end of his career.

I’ve shown her in my #linocut with a diagram of the dividers from her 1st of 26 (!) patents, one of her diagrams about the origin & growth of ripple marks & one of her diagrams of an electric arc lamp (a subject on which she literally wrote the textbook).⁠

Born Phoebe Sarah Marks, she was the 3rd of 8 children 🧵
