After gaining experience at a fairly straightforward site, students in my Quaternary Geology course have moved on to more complicated exposures. We thought that when #SeaLevel dropped during the #glacial maximum, the #RedSea became hyper-saline, and everything died. But there are some new ages and data from deep-sea #corals in the northern Red Sea, which suggests that was definitely not the case. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2415559122

Representative examples of fossil Rhizosmilia valida (Caryophylliidae) and Leptoseris cf. striatus (Agariciidae) skeletons. R. valida is an endemic deep-water coral species and was collected at 20 sites between depths of 400 to 720 m. Leptoseris was collected at six sites between depths of 80 to 90 m.

The web version of Mastodon is really awfully slow. Right now typing this it takes a second or two before the characters are shown in the textbox. Clicking the Notifications or Home link freezes everything for 5-10 seconds before things slowly load. I guess this is Javascript's fault too. We should never have allowed our tools to become web based. But few tools are as laggy as Mastodon though.

#DidYouKnow: A #Nunatak (from Inuit nunataq) is the summit or ridge of a mountain that protrudes from an ice field or glacier that otherwise covers most of the mountain or ridge. They often form natural pyramidal peaks.

Isolated nunataks are also called #Glacial #Islands, and smaller nunataks rounded by glacial action may be referred to as rognons.

The fast-eroding cliffs at #Happisburgh, Norfolk exhibit splendid exposures of a "tripartite" (like neapolitan ice cream) Quaternary #geological succession - massive brown/grey #glacial till at the base, overlain by dark, laminated pro-glacial lake muds, then by glaciofluvial sands.
Two photos show infilled channels in the upper surface of the till, and one shows where the upper two units have been eroded back, exposing the upper surface of the half million year old Happisburgh Till Member.
