I was looking for an op art-style piece that participants in a recent creative coding workshop I ran could recreate. The implementation ended up more complex than what I had in mind, so I didn’t end up using it. But seeing as the Day 19 prompt for Genuary was “Op Art”, I thought I’d share the results.

When I make op-art sketches, I always end up spending a long time tweaking and playing around with them. It's meditative and enjoyable, even if not always the most productive use of my time. I started with a colorful organic sketch, which was rather silly and not very nice to look at. I started over with a back-to-the-basics B&W geometric system.

I haven't much to say about this one. Somehow the result is both better and worse than I had envisioned.

I couldn't come up with anything impressive for just pi=4 so I combined it with op art, then it came to life, especially if you have a comparison right away. This is why the video contains the Python prompt on the top and you can see the drastic change when pi becomes 4 for a while.

Today I could find some time to push this simple generative op-art drawing tool, based on my ideas from the 2010's, with the particular detail of the stroke changing as you press your mouse. I love Op Art and it always makes me think of eyes, hence this particular shape, which also references my studio's logotype.

I was working on one of my daily #inkyDays drawings, and liked it so much that I decided to do a bigger version on watercolor paper. While I was working on that drawing, I realized that it looked a bit like "Op Art". So I decided to share it for today's prompt.

So today I'll cheat and post one of my favourite images ever.
A sculpture I modelled long ago in Softimage XSI with subdivision surfaces and then tried to UV-unwrap generatively...
...which went beautifully wrong, the checkerboard grid was deformed into a fantastic pattern.
I have this hanging on my wall as a large print.
