So when asked to make mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier’s portrait I already had an idea about trying to show how Fourier analysis taught us we can make any shape- even his own outline- by summing sinusoids. As described, a photo of two linocut prints drying on my floor with worn red patterned carpet. The prints are on white washi paper 30 cm by 40 cm and have one large section of a circle and several varied smaller overlapping circles in tints and shades of pale orange to pale golden yellow-orange. Fourier is printed in blue ink on top of these orange circles and dressed in 18th century garb. A red sinusoidal function is printed on top such that his head finds within a crest and the throughs to either side frame him.
