Ahhhh I got caught up processing photos and forgot to share
But here's one... my first ever Bee Fly!!!
I have fallen in love with them via other people's photos this Spring and I was really hoping to see one this year
So cool
Four flies for #FridayFlyDay which I photographed in the back yard yesterday.
Genus Zacompsia (I think)--a picture-winged fly in the family Ulidiida. Neotephritis finalis
(Sunflower Seed Maggot fly)--a species of fruit fly in the family Tephritidae. Genus Elachiptera--genus of frit flies in the family Chloropidae (larvae feed on grasses). Cylindromyia intermedia--a species of bristle fly in the family Tachinidae.
This little lance fly spent a long time tasting my fingers. Eventually she decided that I wasn't edible and went to look elsewhere for dinner.
Found this Houdini fly (Cacoxenus indagator) lurking around one of my bee hotels today. They are kleptoparasites of mason bees (Osmia spp.) and are not native to North America. They are the number one reason why nesting tubes in my area (Pennsylvania) should be cleaned during the winter. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THEM. #BeeHotel #InsectHotel #MasonBees #bee #bees #flies #diptera #inaturalist #insects
@enog Could I trouble you for comments about these flies? The bowl is from a house I'm helping to clean out. #flies #flyfishing #fishing #porcelain #trout

"The flowers of #Aristolochia are pollinated by #flies attracted by the smell of decaying flesh they produce. As they advance in the pipe-like structure of these #flowers, flies cannot fly back outside, forcing them to keep advancing until they reach the chamber with pollen... A new study investigates how specialised hairs called trapping #trichomes ensure #pollination in A. esperanzae"
A Bee Fly, Brachyanax satellitius, spotted at Thomson Nature Park on 22 Dec 2024. The second shot shows it in mid-flight.
Within a day of posting it on iNaturalist, it was identified, showing the power of a world-wide social network for nature observations.
So far, this is the first and only observation of Brachyanax satellitius on iNaturalist [ https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/255849619 ].
Last Saturday was Insect Acrobatics day:
* Crane flies like the one in this photo skimmed the creeks, bounced off the water and zoomed up to fight? mate? with each other.
* Water striders grappled with each other on the creek, sometimes so enthusiastically that they'd flip into the air and splash back down.
* Large carpenter bees visited tiny flowers that couldn't support them, dumping the bees on their butts.
A swarm of midges around my hat were the spectators.
I have some ancient spoiled cat food that I've saved for the specific purpose of attracting soldierflies. It's attracted them before. So I'm hoping to create a method with reproducible results.
I think a lot of people don't like soldierflies... But as far as flies go, I can't think of a more likable one. They don't bite spread disease, or like to be indoors. They compost!
Anyway, I mixed some old cat food with old water. I plan to let it ferment. Outside!

The day started clouded but soon we had blue skies. Nice waddle in the local woods with birds and bees (well, actually wasps and flies)

A lovely fruit fly, genus Themara, spotted at the Wallace Trail at Dairy Farm Nature Park, Singapore on 21 Dec 2024. Unlike other fruit flies, this one has eyes on stalks, resembling the family of Stalk-Eye Flies.
On iNaturalist [ https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/255752267 ].
A pair of mating fungus Gnats, genus Allactoneura, spotted at Dairy Farm Nature Park, Singapore on 21 Dec 2024. They are only a few mm in length, so steady hands were needed to take these shots.
On iNaturalist [ https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/255752288 ].
What’s in a name…. Tapered drone fly.
Saw this one earlier today.

#Flies are masters of migration https://theconversation.com/flies-are-masters-of-migration-its-about-time-they-got-some-credit-253254
Dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant and ecologically important https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/brv.70017
"All over the world, it’s mostly females that migrate. They have been recorded migrating through mountain passes high in the Himalayas, on ships hundreds of miles out to sea in the Gulf of Mexico & in their millions through western Europe. Forcipomyia midges use their soft foot hairs to stick to dragonfly wings to hitch a lift over the Indian Ocean"
