The EU is mandating messaging apps be compatible with each other, but the current plan is looking less like #federation and more like "register your chat app with Meta, send them all your data, and link with their prescribed APIs that they may decide to change any day"

At the risk of preaching to the converted, here's @guusdk advocating for *real* interoperability between messaging apps, using an existing, battle-tested, #IETF-backed standard: #XMPP! :xmpp:

I wish people had even higher expectations for #instantMessaging apps: #Privacy, #noAds, freedom from corporate interests, respect for #humanRights, low energy consumption, #digitalSovereignty. And not AI powered, flashy #stickers.

Free and federated applications and services, made and run by e.g. small cooperatives or volunteers, cannot compete with billion dollar companies on resources. We have other strengths, though!

@prav wants to reach out to people directly through presence at various events. We talk about #privacy, #Federation / #xmpp and #FreeSoftware. We can do this sustainably at scale only if we are able to support volunteers going to these events by covering their travel, accommodation and food expenses. Or we have a large pool of volunteers so we have someone nearby to any event.

According to the interviews there is a shared interest in #federated technologies but several things are slowing down the adoption of #decentralized tools such as: lack of awareness about these tools, strong dependency from popular platforms, perceived complexity of use ("lack of familiar features"). Our mission is to help partner organizations successfully migrate to the #Fediverse while analyzing and documenting the whole process to understand main blockers and affordances of the #federation

These are the places I love the most. Kinda alone. Nature. Peaceful.

Today we got another Abuse report from the hosting company. I think I am quite sure there was something bad with our server, namely with our Synapse (Matrix) server. It was accessing iPs from outside every second or so. Lots and lots of requests. After investigating we realized we had around 500 guest users. These users do not need an email account/registration to be part of the server. We enabled that a while ago. Bad decision.

We nuked them all today. Now hopefully that was the issue and many of these were bots spamming other Matrix servers and users.

We need to think well about the services we provide for TROM.tf because they can be abused...

Hopefully this fixes the issue with the hosting.

These days/weeks I have to work on a new WebApe project, to make some money, so I will have to delay any creative work I planned to do. But if this new project can be done then I will get more monthly financial support, which is something I really need.

And after it is done I can think of new content to create for TROM.

Paintwork on the deflector didn’t turn out too great, so I removed the paint, then used masking tape to create a template for a styrene version, painted it copper and glued it into place. Much better! Now that so many moved of from #Twitter it should have been an opportunity for more #Federation
but #NIH syndrome of #Bluesky and the political surrounding situation somehow worsened it.

Besides the whole technical discussion #Mastodon or #ActivityPubs public-relations
to expand the userbase could have been better.

Now we kinda have a set back where we just have a Twitter under another name
with slightly better API access compared to Pre Musik/SigHeil-Hitler.
