#XMPP *is* standardized. It's probably the *only* IM protocol, that is an RFC. (EDIT: And good old IRC!)

Whatsapp was originally based on XMPP (#ejabberd), but they never federated (the #standard does not mandate #federation) and moved away from standard compliance. TTBOMK, the only reminiscence left, is port 5222/tcp

Als ich letztes mal geguckt habe (lange her), war es etwas veraltet und ich glaube, daß Calls noch nicht unterstützt wurden.

#XMPP und Email mit identischer Adresse ist ein tolles Feature, was leider zu wenig bekannt ist.

AFAIK, #Conversations offers domain hosting on their #ejabberd. I.e. they could (in theory) grab all your metadata, sell it, and send you daily reminders to buy #MobileCoin from them. However, as you own your domain, you could export your data ("XEP-0227: Portable Import/Export Format for XMPP-IM Servers") and move elsewhere. Also, Conversations is hosted in the #EU, i.e. #GDPR applies until #FriedrichMerz kills it.

There are various providers to host your own #XMPP domain or your own complete #Jabber server.

E.g. #conversations (same people as the Android client, i.e. @daniel) or #Snikkett by @snikket_im and many more.

The former is based on #Ejabberd by @ejabberd, the latter on #Prosody by @prosodyim.

@frox there is a #prosody module (https://modules.prosody.im/mod_service_outage_status.html) and we will likely implement this in #ejabberd in the coming weeks. We want this for our server too.

Add mod_muc_occupantid: {} to the modules section of your ejabberd.yml and then restart ejabberd. You will be able to send emoji reactions in MUCs

Any developers willing to port/adapt/rewrite #ejabberd api component of #Quicksy server to work with #prosody #xmpp server?

Basically we want to create xmpp accounts via a server component after verifying phone number with sms otp.

Currently it is possible to do this on ejabberd, but adding prosody support will make it easy to add phone number verification to prosody as well. Adding phone number verification or an invite to create account will help stop #spam accounts by a huge margin.

Install #eJabberd they say, it'll be easy they* say!!

We can send messages to each other using #XMPP desktop clients or the converse.js web client I've set up at a URL, but been bashing my head against file/image uploads for a couple of hours now. Was some funky systemd/filesystem protection shit going on and I fixed and now I don't have an error about file permissions... instead the whole thing just silently fails.
