For the final crustacean of May and the “really not a crab” prompt for #InsertAnInvert2024 I have opted for a far more common (and frankly less terrifying) little creature than the suggested species (that even our crustacean expert called “absolute abominations”). This little cutie on the other hand, is a freshwater water flea. Daphnia longispina is a planktonic crustacean of the 🧵1/n

Happy #printdayinmay2024 #printdayinmay y’all.

Spent the afternoon finally printing the first telephone pole #drypoint #etching plate

I’d torn the paper a couple weeks back, but didn’t get to the #printmaking part until today!

Things that went well:
* water level in paper controlled with sprayer and blotting
* oil-based speedball block ink working better than others so far
* understood that wood spoon is the best pressure (compared to speedball baren)
* understood that work’s presses are both too small and inconsistent pressure to handle a 10x7 inch plate

Experimenting with Tetrapak printing Daphnia, weird little planktonic crustaceans a few millimetres in length known as water fleas.

This one is Daphnia longispina, a Eurasian fresh water flea found in bodies of water of various sizes, as small as rock pools up to large lakes. They mainly eat algae.

Tetrapak printing is something you can do with Tetrapak containers - in this case an empty box of juice!

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt talon, I thought I would experiment with dry point on aluminum can! I’ve been thinking about using trash (or in this case something from the recycling bin) to make art. I cut open the pop can and made a flat rectangle of thin aluminum. I did a quick sketch based on photos of harpy eagle talons, then incised the drawing into the aluminum.

A number of years ago I was accepted into a juried show for LGBTQIA artists. I chose to do a few editions of prints. I'm going to share some of those images in an effort to share my art here since I chose this instance to connect with artists!

This is a drypoint print I hand etched of a feather. This image was used as an album cover after being slightly digitally altered.

We are 10% through our #OldEnglish Poetry in Facsimile Junius 11 edition of Genesis A&B. Long way to go, but the hard work of starting is done.

When finished in August, it will be 70% of the OE poetic corpus edited to digital facsimile.

Track progress & check out 225+ other editions here: oepoetryfacsimile.org

For now, enjoy a great #drypoint drawing of St. Michael (?) w/ a bossed shield fighting a dragon (?) !!
