#Trump #VeteransAffairs Secy Douglas A. Collins took to social media on Tues to tout sweeping #cuts to contracts that he said would save the #VA nearly $2B w/o touching core services.

But the 875 contracts on the chopping block help cover #medical services, fund #cancer programs, recruit #doctors & provide burial services to #veterans, acc/to internal VA documents.

We live in a society of many different faiths and I consider myself respectful of beliefs wildly divergent from my own, but this behaviour felt far beyond the pale.

His behaviour warranted far less respect than I gave, even though it felt uncomfortable to me to speak in a way that *felt* disrespectful in and of itself.

#Trump’s campaign against #Harris, the sitting VP, featured a torrent of attacks steeped in #sexism, #SexualViolence & #vulgarity.

Harris’s loss is disheartening enough, but for the country to elect someone who has made his #disrespect for #women clear is basically kicking you when you’re already down.

Surveys conducted before the election pointed to a wide — & perhaps historic — gender gap in the support for the two candidates, w/most women supporting Harris & most men supporting Trump.

In her resignation letter, Strand wrote of a peaceful town disrupted because “some individuals believe that it is OK to treat #CommunityService members with #disrespect, #slander, #libel, #stalking & many other forms of #harassment towards people who are just trying to make a difference for the good of the community we live in.”

…no money was ever received by the family from #Trump. Some of the costs…were covered by the #Army (which offered…to allow Guillén to be buried at #ArlingtonNationalCemetery) & some were covered by donations. Ultimately, Guillén was buried in Houston.

…The personal qualities displayed by Trump in his reaction to the cost of the Guillén funeral—#contempt, #rage, #parsimony, #racism—hardly surprised his inner circle.

In an Oval Office meeting on Dec 4, 2020, ofcls gathered to discuss a separate #NationalSecurity issue. Toward the end of the discussion, Trump asked for an update on the McCarthy investigation.

…5 months later, the secretary of the #Army, Ryan McCarthy, announced the results of an investigation. McCarthy cited numerous “leadership failures” at #FortHood & relieved or suspended several officers, including the base’s commanding general. In a press conference, McCarthy said that the murder “shocked our conscience” & “forced us to take a critical look at our systems, our policies, & ourselves.”

Shortly after her remains were discovered, then-President #Trump himself invited #VanessaGuillén’s family to the WH. With Guillén’s mother seated beside him, Trump spent 25 mins w/the family as TV cameras recorded the scene. [note this was prior to the 2020 #election]

In april 2020, #VanessaGuillén, a 20-year-old #Army private, was bludgeoned to death by a fellow #soldier at #FortHood, in #Texas. The killer, aided by his girlfriend, burned Guillén’s body. Guillén’s remains were discovered 2 months later, buried in a riverbank near the base, after a massive search.

Guillén, the daughter of #Mexican #immigrants, grew up in #Houston, & her murder sparked outrage across TX & beyond.
