"This panel argues the following claims:
- First, that we should innovate our economic models.
- Second, that we should do so in depth and systematically, not in tweaks. We are not speaking of business models, but of fundamentals.
- Third, that we can do so."

The video of the panel on "Alternative Economic and Financial Models" that I had the honor to chair at the Istanbul Innovation Days 2025.

Amusing and interesting Kohei Saito's chapter about "Marx in the Anthropocene". Basically a neat speculation on what Marx could have said in his last years after his working notes on ecology and communal societies, and leaving behind Eurocentrism and productivism. According to Saito he would have enunciated "degrowth communism"!! Interesting, no doubt... Not sure though if it is an exercise in Marx-fiction --- but never mind, it might be an efficient fiction...

There will only be a green revolution, green new deal, or whatever, without #capitalism and with #degrowth. Green capitalism is a myth.

VPRO Frontline: *The Green Illusion*

"Nowhere is the downside of energy transition more visible than in #NewCaledonia. The French archipelago has large #nickel reserves, which are essential for electric cars. #France therefore wants to preserve the strategic area, with major consequences for both #biodiversity and the original inhabitants, the #Kanak. Bram Vermeulen investigates these tensions for #VPRO Frontline.

While #Europe seeks a green revolution, New Caledonia's nickel industry causes large-scale environmental #pollution and threatens the island's unique biodiversity. The effects of "mining are visible everywhere: excavated mountaintops, ruined mangroves. What was once a tropical paradise is slowly turning into a barren moonscape.

For the Kanak, the original inhabitants of New Caledonia, the consequences are even more dire. Their dependence on fishing is threatened by toxic “zones du mort” in the mangroves, caused by waste from the mines and refineries. Ironically, the nickel plants are powered by #coal and largely owned by foreign companies, including French parties. …"

Response to Manuel and Mark

In the series Prospects for Degrowth
by Ted Trainer
Dear Manuel and Mark, thanks for your valuable commentaries on my impressions about the movement.
On Manuel’s response I think that Manuel is quite correct in noting that my comments do not apply well to some regions, and especially to Spain. His previous emails to me have given me the impression that the situation in Spain is far ahead of other regions...

#Caturday began at 5:30am this morning. Calling it a night. Looking forward to #SolarPunkSunday tomorrow. I hope folks will join me (between 11am and 5pm EDT). I'm hoping @BrambleBearGrrrauwling and @MaQuest will chime in. And anyone else who wants to post about such topics as #Degrowth, #Rewilding, #GreenCities, #Gardening, #Sustainability, #CircularEconomy, #LibraryOfThings, #RepairCafes, #Bicycles, #VisibleMending, #DIY, and more! Ideas and posts welcome!

Read the first 50 pages of Kohei Saito's "Slow Down. The Degrowth Manifesto". As usual the diagnostics part of this genre of books is devastating. KS particularly insists in the non viability of green growth and technosolutionism --- including of course electric cars.
I hope once he starts studying actual degrowth ideas, it will turn somehow more optimistic and inspiring. It actually starts with Kate Raworth's "Doughnut Economy diagram" which I used to teach my students and find very valuable. Let's see.
