NORTH SEA // Surprise Eggs
Oil painting inspired by Patrick von Kalckreuth's "Schaumkronen auf Wogender See" (1950), commissioned by a Chinese copyist in "Dafen Village" in Shenzhen on behalf of the artist. The oil paint was mixed with plastic particles obtained from shredded surprise eggs. The surprise eggs come from a vessel that lost its freight in a heavy storm on January 4th, 2017 off the coast of the East Frisian island Langeoog.
Realized with the help of Lions Club Langeoog.

SPACE HEROINES (How to kick ass in space or The bias of AI)

Series of female super heroines who maintain law and order in the universe and fight against space debris. The work is conceived as a commentary on male-dominated space travel and of male-determined self-conceptions of space conquest. It was created in the context of an artist residency at European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt that Güntzel held in 2022. The works were generated using the open source DALL.E 2 AI from descriptions in natural language. Since then, Güntzel has continued to further develop the work, which simultaneously questions the biased practice of AI in which “heroines” are standardized as white, young, slender, mostly blond, scantily clad, over-sexualized women. More inclusive and diverse images emerged only when prompts explicitly contradicted these norms. Even then, the AI often failed to produce a more inclusive image or the results are so impaired that they are unusable (images that lacked colour, figures without faces, etc.). Performance presented at Performance Festival Perform now! Winterthur, Switzerland in 2015. After sewing a "trunk" made of lids for coffee-to-go cups the artist wandered around, stared at people, stopped in front of walls and eventually opened the trunk again to throw the lids on the floor. She then disappeared.

Lunar Litter (Jettison Bag) or Things we left on the moon
Garbage bag, inspired by the so-called “jettison bags” used in space travel. I had two of these bags produced and embroidered with the lettering “lunar litter only.” On May 23, 2023, one bag was sent to the HQ of NASA with the request that it be taken to the moon as part of the Artemis II mission, planned for 2025, to retrieve some of the 190 tons of material left behind by NASA during the Apollo missions.

Production in front of the work “Harbor Entrance” (1916) by Erich Heckel (1883–1970). The work was realized in the painting depot of Museum Kunst der Westküste (Föhr). The artist holds a 100-pound US aerial bomb under her arm which was recovered from the North Sea. The work is part of the artist´s ongoing series "Seascapes".
In the German North and Baltic Seas, there are contaminated sites of about 1.6 million tons of conventional munitions and 5,000 tons of chemical warfare agents dumped during World War II by military operations or afterwards by dumping (source: Federal Environment Agency Germany).

I wrote a remembrance of Mel Bochner, a mentor from grad school whose art exposed the cracks between words and reality. His 1970 dictum “language is not transparent” feels prophetic now that we use black boxes to churn out news, legal documents, and medical advice. He died Wednesday.

"Sowing Seeds, Digging for Dreams" is a commemorative sculpture I made from my dad's salvaged shovelheads and metal scraps.
He passed away in 2020. At the time, I didn't know he was having a stroke, as we had our last conversation, watching the Steller's Jays picking seeds and hanging from the sunflowers on my front porch. I used the theme of this poigniant moment for a solo exhibit commemorating him called "Tangible Stories," at The Old School House in Qualicum Beach, in 2023.
This piece also had an interactive element from another project I will share next.
