🚨 #Science Win!

A new #storage technique can keep protein-based #drugs & #vaccines stable w/o keeping them #cold, potentially eliminating the need for #refrigeration & allowing their use in places where constant refrigeration is not possible.

The researchers created a new perfluorocarbon oil storage solution & surfactant to coat the surface of the drug molecules.

This shell keeps the #medicine stable at temps up to 212°F (100°C).

As a result of the wave of #Conservative disgust that #PMTrudeau took time off to take his children to the #TaylorSwift concert in #Toronto because he didn't foresee a random riot happening in #Montreal when he purchased the tickets months ago, I'm calling for #PierrePoilievre and the entire #Conservatative party to public declare and sign a #Pledge that if elected they will either #Sell their #Families or put them in #ColdStorage until they leave office and that they will be chained to their desks in Ottawa! This will remove the need for them to spend anytime with family and ensure they are always at there desk if some unforeseen emergency comes up!

Now to assure you that I'm not some monster, this plan will include replacing all their chairs with toilets.

#Vacation2024 on #CapeCod Delayed post from the weekend. So nice to be back especially since the season hasn't really started; little traffic and no crowds yet. Always excited to cross the Bourne Bridge on #Saturday but still another hour to reach #Truro After unloading at our rental, spent the late afternoon at #BallstonBeach enjoying #GoldenHour, that magical time when most everyone has left, the water takes on an iridescence and you're just damned happy to be there. Stopped at #MobyDicksSeafood for our usual first night dinner before back to the rental to chill.

After an unusually comfortable sleep (the rental has a Tempurpedic), we spent a #lazysunday at #ColdStorage beach on the bay side. A hidden gem, though wasn't thrilled with the obnoxious 'No Trespassing' signs posted by the beachfront property owners; we put our chairs within the confines of the town beach, but wandered far and wide at the water's edge. Would have been a perfect time except for shrieking kids (I'll give them a pass; it's the beach after all) and the constant aroma of cannabis from one group. I don't mind partaking occasionally, but damn, how much and how long can you smoke! We picked up tuna and swordfish steaks from the fish monger and prepared on the grill.

More to come.
Edit: correct typo

#WordyWednesday: Reefer (no, not that kind) ❄️

AKA Cooler or Refrigerator

If a body needs to be held for a period of time and isn’t embalmed, it must be refrigerated to prevent decomposition. I mean, we’re going to decompose eventually, but the process needs to be paused for sanitation and funeral/viewing reasons.

Depending on the location, a mortuary might have a 1-2 person cooling chamber, or maybe a mid-size walk-in cooler with shelving or rolling tables. Some high volume facilities have larger capacities (40-50ish). Emergency situations like mass fatality disasters or hmmm, let’s see… pandemics! can necessitate the use of refrigerated truck trailers. They’re basically the same ones that keep your groceries fresh during transit and are referred to as reefers.

By the way, these are NOT freezers. The temperature is maintained between 36-39°F (that’s 2-4°C for you non-USians). This slows decomposition down to a crawl without creating ice crystals that damage tissues.

Would you be interested in having your (most valuable) data on a blu-ray disk stored somewhere? How much would you pay per 25GB/year?
It's not the cloud, it's not someone-else computer, it's just a blu-ray in someone else garage! You upload your encrypted image, we burn it and store it safely.
Recovery could be putting the data available for download or shipping the media physically (additional cost).
