After Pitlochry today, we headed for Dunkeld since it was on the way home.

I adore Dunkeld, so many old buildings lead the way to the cathedral. The cathedral itself is an interesting building, the history of it is absolutely fascinating. The present cathedral dates from 1318, parts of it took a battering during the Reformation. The choir part of the cathedral does have a roof and is used as the parish church. The church part is open to visitors and is a lovely, peaceful space, with a small museum attached to tell you the history of the place. The grounds are beautiful, tall trees and lush green grass, home to a lot of rabbits. The river Tay - yes, the same river I sit next to when I pop to the shops - runs alongside the grounds.

Dunkeld is a lovely place, there isn't an awful lot to do there, but there are some amazing walks in the area (one day I might manage them again). Although I am not religious, visiting the cathedral is always a highlight, a place I feel at peace.

Today has been pretty damn good.

A terrible photo of The Atholl Memorial Fountain in Dunkeld. It is an ornate tall fountain, a stone base, four pillars with ornate arches and a spire reaching up into the sky. The fountain is covered in stone carvings of different native animals and birds. In the centre of the fountain is a carving of fish. On each side of the fountain is what appears to be a metal lions head which are the spouts of the fountain, spilling water into a stone bowl. Behind the fountain is the stone building which is the community archive.
The large and imposing stained glass window within Dunkeld Cathedral. There are 10 large panes in the window depicting people/different religious scenes. Above the large panes are 8 smaller panes each with one person depicted. The colours are bold - reds, greens, blues.
A view of the cathedral taken from within the grounds. Looking up the sloped grass and through the tall trees, the catherdral can be seen. A large stone building with 2 very distinct halves. One have is the restored choir which is in use today for services. The other half is in a serious state of disrepair, through the ruined windows and the upper ledge where there was a roof, scaffolding is visible.

1/5 St Albans Cathedral

This week a set from a visit to #StAlbans #cathedral - a little north of London. The #romanesque arches you see here, and most of the church is 11th century Norman, but there are a lot of gothic and Victorian additions - and you can see the joins.

#ttartisan10mmf2 on #Olympus EM1iii. This a relatively new lens for me. I like it and it's excellent value. I like the sun stars which considering it was probably at f2.8 were a surprise.

Crypt of the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-and-Sainte-Julitte in Nevers, France, 2021

A crypt (from Latin crypta "vault") is a stone chamber beneath the floor of a church or other building. It typically contains coffins, sarcophagi, or religious relics. First known in the early Christian period, in particular North Africa and Byzantium, churches were often built over a Mithraic temple, erected in classical antiquity by the worshippers of Mithras. Worshippers of Mithras had a complex system of seven grades of initiation and communal ritual meals. Initiates called themselves syndexioi, those "united by the handshake". They met in an underground temple, the so called Mithraeum. This Mithraeum was either a natural cave or cavern, or a building imitating a cave, that was adopted by the early christian builders to serve as a crypt for the newly build church above.

In antiquity the Mithraeum primarily functioned as an area for initiation, into which the soul descends and exits. The Mithraeum itself was arranged as an "image of the universe". It is noticed by some researchers that this practice, especially in the context of mithraic iconography, seems to stem from the neoplatonic concept that the "running" of the sun from solstice to solstice is a parallel for the movement of the soul through the universe, from pre-existence, into the body, and then beyond the physical body into an afterlife.

Uppsala Cathedral is the largest church building in Scandinavia, with its twin spires reaching over 118 meters into the sky. I had the privilege of seeing the imposing cathedral regularly, but capturing it shrouded in fog remains one of my favorite moments.
