#Harvard professors sue #Trump administration over funding cut threats

by Katie Cole, April 14, 2025, #WBUR

"The Harvard chapter of the American Association of University Professors sued the Trump administration Friday over what they call an 'unlawful and unprecedented' attempt to use federal funding cuts to restrict #FreeSpeech.

"The #DepartmentOfEducation announced in late March that it would review $8.7 billion in federal grants and contacts given to Harvard, alleging that the school failed to prevent #antisemitic discrimination on campus.

"The Trump administration then unveiled a broad set of demands on April 4 the university must agree to in order to keep getting federal funding, including cutting all diversity, equity and inclusion programming, and modifying any programming and departments that 'fuel antisemitic harassment.' The administration gave Columbia University a similar set of demands in March, which the school agreed to.

"The lawsuit by the professors' group, filed in #Massachusetts federal court, alleges that the administration's federal funding review violates the #TitleVI of the #CivilRightsAct, which prohibits discrimination in programs that receive federal funds. The court filing says the law requires specific procedures to cut federal funds and that the Trump administration has not taken any of those steps.

"The group said in a press release that the administration's actions are in effort to create a chilling effect among universities and faculty to stop speech that the president does not like.

" 'Eliminating discrimination and protecting all students is important,' said Nikolas Bowie, a Harvard law professor and the secretary-treasurer of the school's #AAUP chapter, in a statement. 'But Trump is defying the Civil Rights Act, terrifying students, and illegally holding hostage grants for hospitals and scientific research so he can accomplish his real goal of punishing academics for our politics.'

"The lawsuit says that the actions by the administration have 'already caused severe and irreparable harm by halting #academic #research and #inquiry at Harvard.'

"This is the second suit that the Harvard AAUP chapter has filed against the Trump administration this year. The first was a joint suit with other chapters, including one from Columbia, over federal efforts to deport #MahmoudKhalil and students that engaged in #ProPalestinian #activism."

#Germany seeks to #deport #protesters

Submitted by webadmin on 9 April, 2025

"The German state has issued deportation orders for three #EUCitizens and one #American who have attended #ProPalestinian protests.

"Berlin immigration authorities issued the orders on 31 March, demanding that the four individuals leave Germany within one month or else face deportation. Their orders cite a protest in October 2024 in which masked individuals caused 'significant property damage, including #graffiti', as well as resisting arrest and calling a #police officer a '#fascist'.

"Unusually, three of the four orders also invoke the German principle of #Staatsräson, (“#StateReason”). This term originates from a speech #AngelaMerkel gave to the #IsraeliKnesset in 2008, asserting that #Israeli security was fundamental to the purpose of the German state.

"Staatsräson is not an officially defined term or codified anywhere in the German constitution or by German courts. At least two of the protestors are appealing the decision, with their lawyer telling Al-Monitor that it is a 'political concept, not a legal concept, and therefore unlawful'.

"In any case, the #deportation of #activists for #protesting should be opposed.

#Khalil

"The activists’ lawyer has drawn parallels to the case of #MahmoudKhalil in the US. 'I see similarities… It is weaponization of #ImmigrationLaw as a tool to silence #PoliticalDissent'. Khalil’s case may also lead to a debate on interpretations of the US constitution’s #FirstAmendment.

"Back in February, #Berlin police broke up a protest, citing a ban on '#ArabicChanting', the playing of #ArabicMusic, or giving a speech in #Arabic. In October 2024, police raided the homes of five men, four of whom were being investigated over 'authorship of #antisemitic social media posts'.

Clapping

"And after the joint Israeli-Palestinian documentary #NoOtherLand won an Academy Award, German culture minister Claudia Roth insisted that she was only clapping for Israeli director Yuval Abraham, not Palestinian director #BaselAdra. Several politicians, including the mayor of Berlin, called for her resignation. A torrent of public criticism was aimed at #YuvalAbraham for his acceptance speech, to which he responded: 'To stand on German soil as the son of Holocaust survivors and call for a ceasefire — and to then be labelled as antisemitic is not only outrageous, it is also literally putting Jewish lives in danger.'

"Israeli politicians cited German politicians when attacking the filmmakers themselves, and only weeks later, co-director #HamdanBallal was attacked by #IsraeliSettlers in the #WestBank, and removed from an ambulance by #IDF soldiers.

"German Staatsräson is less about assuring Israel’s right to exist, and more about giving a free hand to the #repressive policies of the Israeli right."

"[W]ithin 48 hours, the message was distorted into something else entirely. The video has racked up more than 6 million views after being re-shared by several far-right influencers on X. It has become fuel for an #antisemitic #conspiracy theory: that Coca-Cola is making a superior version of its product for #Jews only. A chosen beverage of the chosen people.

The idea that “the Jews” are hoarding something — knowledge, money, vaccines, in this case soda — is hardly new. But the way this specific idea propagated, and the speed with which it did, is deeply contemporary. In the age of TikTok and X, every niche cultural product — even #Passover Coke — can become a political totem."

"As was the case last year, there also is intense concern in some countries about a high level of #antisemitic incidents.

More than 10,000 antisemitic incidents in the #UnitedStates were reported between #Oct7, 2023, and Sept. 24, 2024 — the most ever recorded by the Anti-Defamation League.

The Secure Community Network, which provides security and safety resources to hundreds of #Jewish organizations and institutions across #NorthAmerica, has been issuing frequent advisories ahead of #Passover.

Specifically, the group has warned of possible threats from white extremist groups, including some organizing along the U.S.-Canada border. SCN said key extremist anniversaries, including #Hitler’s birthday on April 20, coincide with the holiday, raising concerns about the risk of #violence targeting Jewish communities."

#Berlin ’s #immigration authorities are moving to deport four young foreign residents on allegations related to participation in protests against Israel’s war on #Gaza, an unprecedented move that raises serious concerns over civil liberties in #Germany.

The deportation orders, issued under German migration law, were made amid political pressure and over internal objections from the head of the state of Berlin’s immigration agency. The internal strife arose because three of those targeted for deportation are citizens of European Union member states who normally enjoy freedom of movement between #EU countries.
“You can see it in the U.S. and Germany, too: Political dissent is silenced by targeting the migration status of protesters.”
Some of the allegations are minor. Two, for example, are accused of calling a police officer “fascist” — insulting an officer, which is a crime. Three are accused of demonstrating with groups chanting slogans like “From the river to the sea, Palestine Will be Free” — which was outlawed last year in Germany — and “#freePalestine.” Authorities also claim all four shouted #antisemitic or anti-Israel slogans, though none are specified.

Update. Here's a short and simple public statement that criticism of #Israel is not #antisemitic. I just signed and hope you will too.
civicshout.com/p/sign-if-you-a

civicshout.comSign if You Agree: Criticizing Israel Is Not AntisemiticFree speech is under attack. Across the country, politicians are pushing a dangerous narrative that conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism. This false equivalence is not only wrong — it undermines genuine efforts to combat hate. Legitimate criticism of government policies, including Israel’s, is a fundamental right in any democracy. Students, activists, and scholars are now being silenced, threatened, or labeled antisemitic simply for expressing solidarity with Palestinians or questioning U.S. support for Israel’s actions. This dangerous crackdown has reached Congress. During recent hearings, Senator Bill Cassidy and other lawmakers used accusations of antisemitism to attack student protesters and intimidate universities. Rather than addressing the real threat of antisemitism, they weaponized the charge to suppress dissent. Let’s be clear: Antisemitism is a real and urgent problem that must be condemned. But criticism of Israeli government policies is not the same as antisemitism. We can and must stand against hate without undermining free speech and silencing dissent. Add your name to stand up for free speech and say loud and clear: Criticizing Israel is not antisemitic.

"Ever flipped through your #history book and wondered “Why are all the #Jews wearing these funny #hats?”

You find it all over #Christian #art from stained glass windows to manuscripts, the #Judenhat (“#Jewish #hat”) can be traced back to #medieval #Europe.

You can even find it in the Bird’s Head Haggadah and some other Jewish books of the time! Originally a marker of eastern learning, antiquity and authority, and even fashionable with 12th century aristocracy, things took a dark turn as Jews were depicted wearing the hat while killing #Jesus. Paired with a “Jewish nose”, the hat can even sometimes still be seen in #Antisemitic depictions of Jews today."

Elon Musk Shared, Then Removed a Post Absolving Dictators for Genocide

The post falsely claimed that Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong were not responsible for the murders of millions of people, but rather public sector workers were.

"Musk shared the post without any other comment. He removed it soon after users on X criticized the post, saying it was #antisemitic and dismissive of #genocide."

The gunman is a #rabbi, named Moses “Mo” Zaltzman. He and his wife Hindy are raising their kids in a Southwestern small town, where he runs the High Desert #Jewish Center. Clad in a black hat and coat, the normally mild-mannered rabbi has reluctantly taken up firearms lessons to protect himself, his family and his congregation in the wake of a deadly — and allegedly #antisemitic — attack at a gala.

Get ready for a very different kind of #Western with a very catchy title, “Guns & Moses,” from two veteran LA-based #filmmakers, the husband-and-wife team of Salvador and Nina Litvak. Shot in late 2022, it boasts an appearance by the legendary Christopher Lloyd as a Holocaust survivor.

Currently on the festival circuit, the #film has taken on added significance in the post-October 7 world in which Jewish businesses, institutions, and places of worship have been targeted around the globe."

"Last Friday I happened to start watching the discussion at the #WhiteHouse between #Zelenskyi, Donald #Trump, JD #Vance and Brian Glenn towards the end, when Vance was already yelling at the #Ukrainian president: "you're wrong!" I took in the tone and the body language, and my first, reflexive reactions was: these are non-#Jews trying to intimidate a #Jew. Three against one. A roomful against one. An #antisemitic scene.

And the more I listened to the words, the more that reaction was confirmed. I won't speak for how Zelens'kyi regards himself. Ukrainian, of course. Beyond that I don't know. These things are complex, and personal.

But not for the #antisemite."

christian #zionism, evangelical or otherwise, is completely and resolutely #antisemitic.

the goal of guys like Mike Huckabee, the ambassador to #Israel, is to turn Jews to Christianity.

the zionism for evangelicals like Huckabee is just parseltongue for #theocracy.

evangelicals believe it’s a hop & a skip to their cult, once they harden the Jewish theocratic state.

what will they do with Jews who won’t convert?

they’re #necrophilia for evangelicals.
