If being altruistic feels good, lean into that. And then go ahead and toot your own horn. Modeling #altruism as something that is self-rewarding can encourage altruism in others (especially people who have been discouraged by a joylessly puritanical idea of altruism).

It is unfortunate that many popular models of #altruism insist that it’s purer, or only amounts to real altruism, if it is not at all rewarding to the altruist… and ideally if nobody knows about it who might spoil it by applauding.

People who commit altruism shamelessly out in the open as if they’re enjoying themselves are bound to get the stink-eye from someone.

Ayn Rand thought altruists believe “man has no right to exist for his own sake, [but] that service to others is the only justification of his existence.” #Altruism means “any action taken for the benefit of others is good, and any action taken for one’s own benefit is evil.” It is a doctrine of “self-immolation, self-abnegation, self-denial, self-destruction” that “holds death as its ultimate goal.”
