What they don't tell you about total solar eclipses is the sky darkens right over you, and at the horizon you see a sunrise/sunset effect...only it's in every direction. Truly breathtaking. My capture of a particularly sublime one on April 8, 2024: "Ultimate Shadow".

Can't believe it's been a whole year since I got to see the incredible 2024 solar eclipse with my family.

If you ever get a chance to see a total eclipse, do it! It's like nothing else on earth, and is honestly one of the best things I've ever done.

One year ago today I watched the #SolarEclipse in Arkansas. The two total eclipses I've seen have been magnificent to a level that is difficult to describe to those who haven't seen totality.

A year ago today, I was in SuperCam operations, and about to head to the airport to start my cross-country flying adventure to see the total solar eclipse.

Wow, what a fascinating Astronomy Day! The sky was mostly clear in both Bonn and Effelsberg, and our visitors were able to experience the partial solar eclipse (SoFi) on March 29 with their own eyes!

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. This only happens during a new moon and when the Moon is aligned with the Sun and Earth. There are three types of solar eclipses:

Total SoFi - when the Sun is completely covered. A total solar eclipse lasts a maximum of 7 minutes and 32 seconds;
Partial SoFi - when only a part of the Sun is covered;
Annular SoFi - when the Moon is too far away and therefore too small to completely cover the Sun.

Since the Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun and exactly 400 times closer to the Earth, it can completely cover the Sun when viewed from Earth. However, a solar eclipse cannot be observed equally from all places on Earth, but only within a narrow geographic area. But wherever you are, remember: Never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection! For example, SoFi glasses or a welding helmet with the appropriate protection level are suitable, but not regular sunglasses or binoculars.

In addition to the partially obscured Sun, several sunspots were also visible. The number of sunspots depends on the current phase of the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, which is why they are not always visible.

My mother told me she did not have these black clouds on Saturday with the #solareclipse.

To be clear, this is a thick woolly fluffy happy white cloud , which turns dark with backlight and the camera settings to reduce the massive amount of light.

Here are a couple of my partial solar eclipse shots, taken with a fair amount of cloud cover. I’m pretty happy with the results, considering that I only used a relatively cheap Baader solar filter on my telescope and the weather conditions. The equipment I used is in the alt text.
