Droppie [infosec] 🐨:archlinux: :kde: :firefox_nightly: :thunderbird: :vegan:<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.space/@MsDropbear42" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>MsDropbear42</span></a></span> Oh ffs, this latest experiment with :zenbrowser: <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ZenBrowser" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZenBrowser</span></a> has ended after only a few hours, due to yet another catastrophic failure, preceded by various annoyances: </p><ul><li>the dedicated <code>Search Bar</code> refused to show the drop-down menu of alternative search engines [works fine in :firefox: and :firefox_nightly: ]</li><li>the <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Stylus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Stylus</span></a> AO refused to respond to clicks on its various usage & management icons in its drop-down menu [works fine in :firefox: and :firefox_nightly: ]</li><li>a link i opened from my Masto <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Statuzer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Statuzer</span></a> page decided to behave like i'd used <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Glance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Glance</span></a> [i did not], then when i converted it into a normal tab, entirely froze the Statuzer tab</li><li>wondering if possibly restarting Zen might fix the above, i tried to do so, which then destroyed my carefully crafted Zen profile... what ensued was a UI without various standard changes i'd made [eg, the <code>Search Bar</code> was gone again, the native tabs bar refused to Collapse again], but worst of all, <strong><em>all my open tabs were gone</em></strong>... again 😲 🤯🙄🤦♀️😡</li></ul><p>My dear old :firefox_nightly: might be less pretty, less visually exciting, & might not have native split tabs, but <em>far out</em> it is & remains way way <em>waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay</em> more reliable than Zen. I mean, it's really a bit silly... :firefox_nightly: is <strong>Alpha</strong>, :zenbrowser: is <strong>Beta</strong>, yet the former is generally rock solid reliable in the ~decade i've been using it. That said, it is true that occasionally, rarely, there are little wobbles, & i'm now "enjoying" one.</p><p><code>Version Nightly 137.0a1 (20250204145611) Installed on: 5 February 2025 at 10:15:30</code> is exhibiting three interesting little bugs, all of which i surmise relate to something having gone wrong overnight in its <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/Wayland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wayland</span></a> compatibility</p><ul><li>at each launch, the :firefox_nightly: window is now not properly remembering its last size, so needs me to drag its side & bottom edges back to where they should be</li><li>its native middle-mouse-button AutoScroll function still works fine, but the distinctive cursor accompanying it is now generated at least 300 px away from the initiation place, which is disconcerting</li><li>the Overflow Menu & general options hamburger menu icons are ofc at the top rhs of the browser, but now their actual dropdown menus appear on the far lhs of the browser</li></ul><p>I recall similar problems a few years ago when the FF Devs were still settling in their then-new native Wayland compatibility. I surmise something they've recently changed has interfered now with Wayland. A couple of days ago i decided to create a new profile [using the <em>new</em> Profile paradigm in Nightly], into which i installed all the same AOs [except ofc not Sidebery this time], copied across all my bookmarks, passwords, form data etc, to basically replicate my familiar browsing setup except this time with the <em>native</em> VTs & <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/TabGroups" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TabGroups</span></a>. </p><p>I've used this new profile instead of my usual Sidebery profile for the past day, to do all my normal browsing, so i can get a good feel for the viability or not of this native paradigm. Sidebery's hierarchical infinitely-nestable tree-structure is vastly superior to any & all simple flat tab-groups paradigms like Vivaldi, Floorp, Zen, & Chromium... & now also Nightly, but i'm trying to be tenacious & tolerate it so i can make it a worthy IRL comparison test.</p><p>However what's highly irritating is the profligate waste of vertical space of these native VTs compared to Sidebery; see pic. Multiple times i have launched the Nightly <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/BrowserToolbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BrowserToolbox</span></a> UI & tried to discover the specific css code controlling the huge padding & excessive vertical height of these tabs, so i can drastically reduce it in my <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/userChromeCSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>userChromeCSS</span></a>... but each time it seems to evade me [i'm not very good at this].</p><p>Can any actual Devs or otherwise keen FF UI modders please point me to the code in question?</p>

I'm pretty happy with TST, and suspect that the main things I'm missing are small papercuts and UX tune ups, but maybe there are features I don't know I need? Please enlighten me 😁</p>

Floorp <em>continues</em> to be <strong><em>pretty damn awesome</em></strong>...</p><p>...<strong><em>but</em></strong>...</p><p>...astonishingly i've now reverted to Nightly! 😲 🤯 </p><p>Floorp meets all my daily browsing needs beautifully, <em>but</em> for one small irritant that has been occurring for a little while, & which finally caused me to jump. Nowadays my preferred <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/RSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSS</span></a> AO is <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/SmartRSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SmartRSS</span></a> <code>SmartRSS</code>. Sadly it does not <em>"play nice"</em> with either of Floorp's main advantages over Nightly, being its <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Sidebar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sidebar</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/WebPanels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WebPanels</span></a>, & its <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/TabSplitView" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TabSplitView</span></a>. If i am <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/streaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>streaming</span></a> anything in <code>SmartRSS</code> & use either of those lovely Floorp functions, they reflow the <code>SmartRSS</code> tab & reset the list of feeds to the top one, thus aborting whatever i was listening to. It's a real PITA, & coz i've not been able to deduce a workaround, means that instead of streaming <em>whilst</em> browsing [including doing my active Fediversing, for which i frequently use either or both of those Floorp features], i have to <em>first</em> do all my browsing & Fediversing, <em>then</em> do my streaming, which is massively inefficient & time-wasting. Sigh.</p><p>Otoh, in <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Nightly" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Nightly</span></a>, doing ditto but using the <code>Tile Tabs WE</code> AO in lieu of native WebPanels & TabSplit, no disturbance occurs to the active <code>SmartRSS</code> tab. </p><p>As for Nightly's similar lack of native Notes, though i've tried many AOs over the years, for now i'm happy just to make <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/KDEPlasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KDEPlasma</span></a> <em>Kate</em> text files.</p>
