A Monument To Grey

Viewed from Grainger Street this is Grey's Monument in Newcastle upon Tyne. Built in 1838 in recognition of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, UK Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834.
Without this chap there'd be no Earl Grey Tea!

Rising above the River Tyne, part of The Glasshouse International Centre for Music (in the foreground on the right), located on the Gateshead side of the Tyne, with the ever-evolving Newcastle cityscape on the north side of the river.
Grade I listed All Saints' Church, a late 18th-century place of worship can be seen, located on Lower Pilgrim Street.
Interestingly, it is the only elliptical church building in England.
Just beyond All Saints, on the far left, Greys Monument rising up from where Grainger Street and Grey Street meet.

I love this photo, taken by a Newcastle United FC official photographer from the open-topped bus that toured the city centre. That's our son in the football shirt with his family cheering the team from a 1st floor restaurant window (in the warm!)

This Saturday as part of the Everyday Algorithms exhibition: Reimagine your relationship with machines in this workshop to produce queer love letters using Bash scripting with @siusoon and Mara Karagianni.
Saturday 5 April
12pm — 3pm
The NewBridge Project, #Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AL
This workshop aims to challenge the gender norms in free software development. We will begin with a cultural introduction to Unix and #Bash, exploring how they interact with the operating system. Bash, a command line interface and scripting language created in 1989 for UNIX Systems, is useful for system administration and automation.
During the workshop, you will use the terminal, either in pairs, in groups, or individually, to write and create a #queer love letter in Bash. These letters will explore various forms of desire, intimacy, and struggle, allowing us to reimagine what our relationship with the machines we use might look like.
Free, booking is essential: https://thenewbridgeproject.com/events/introducing-bash/
We're also bridged to #bluesky if anyone's over there: https://bsky.app/profile/creativecodeclub-ncl.social.toplap.org.ap.brid.gy

I jogged 4 lengths of this sandy boi this morning. It might not be much by some folks' standards, but it's real progress for me #Longsands #Tynemouth #Newcastle #NorthShields #beach #exercise

This is the fabulously tiled Centurion bar at Newcastle Central Station - a lost gem for decades! (Look it up.) I always wondered how they cleaned those tiles - that poor guy has the longest hoover extension I've ever seen!
So I should re #introduce myself; used to host my own instance at artemai when that was a thing; decided to get back on Mastodon again because the rest of social is a dumpsterfire.
I'm a #UNIX sysadm originally (from the late 90s) but started using #Linux in 91, bringing early
dialup internet to #Newcastle with community group hunter #apana.
I'm a #coder, #python is the go-to language these days, some #js but plenty of #C and some #golang too.
Ten years ago I landed in #liveevents and #visionswitch / #camera #direct #sports presentation in major
#stadiums along with building software for data-driven #content for use in those environments.
I'm a #ham radio operator. Callsign VK2WAY. I'm mostly interested in signals processing and digital communications.
I used to officiate #RollerDerby but have streamed it since 2014 as Downunder Derby TV. I still manage socials for and help co-ordinate Queer Roller Derby - @queerderby.

I just posted a video update for my novel, Neshannock Confluence of New Castle, the first of the Mehitable Lovejoy Chronicles. Check it out now!
This wasn't a cup win, this was a catalyst.
The Man City era is over.
The next 10 - 15 years will see Newcastle become the dominant force in the Premier League. You can forget PSR, the big boys don't follow rules.
