What are your thoughts on this series of Doctor Who being called Season 1?

This isn’t the first time that they’ve restarted numbering. That restarted with New Who too. How do long-time and new fans feel about this change? Is this a way to disregard the past or just something to help onboard new fans?

We’re taking WebMentions and FediVerse replies here.

It's like Moffatt asked "how can I make this world smaller?"

The representation in Davies' Who is not flawless, but Davies intentionally added diversity on a number of fronts which made #NewWho feel dynamic and fresh.

#StevenMoffatt should never have got his hands on that show, following up Davies' #NewWho with derivative storylines retold to be as straight and white and male as possible.

Mind you, #DoctorWho is not really a show whose strength is originality, so I'm not really slamming Moffatt for the derivative nature of where he went with the show... My problem is more that he did the blandest version of it (okay not THE blandest, because that honor belongs to Chibnall).

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

DOCTOR WHO: "Extremis" - 5/20/2017, BBC One

The 12th Doctor's main sidekick in 2017 was a lesbian college student named Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) on this long-running science fiction adventure series. In this clip, one of Bill's rare dates is interrupted twice: first by Bill's foster mother and then by someone far less likely.

When DOCTOR WHO returned in 2005 after a 16-year hiatus, its first showrunner was Russell T. Davies, who had created QUEER AS FOLK in the 1990s. He quickly established that "New Who" would be queer inclusive, with the introduction of a pansexual recurring character, Captain Jack Harkness, in 2005. Over a decade later, Bill Potts was DOCTOR WHO's 1st ongoing openly queer regular role, and her search for a girlfriend bookended her original run on the series. The showrunner who created the character was Steven Moffat.
