@urlyman

I really fear this.

If they give in to the big house builders that have a stranglehold over new homes over energy efficiency measures, then they are condemning the UK to fail on reaching #NetZero (figures vary considerably but up to 25% of UK emissions believed to come from domestic homes).

But equally important they are condemning residents to higher bills and leaving them tied into fossil fuel technology (gas boilers) for decades longer than necessary.

Continued thread

Private home owners are expected to apply piecemeal for boiler upgrade schemes and insulation schemes, some of which are doled out based on household income, others not.

It’s a mess that I had hoped #Labour would bring ‘clarity’ to.

But I feel they’ve done nothing.

#Miliband is too ‘big picture’ on the grid and nuclear power, while #Reeves has yet to convince me she buys into #NetZero or recognises the immense threat of #ClimateBreakdown.

‘If the prime minister is really preparing to go into battle for #NetZero, as he promised, his real difficulties may lie not with #Reform’s surge, his own backbenchers, or even the #Green party’s ecopopulists. He needs to look next door.’

The Guardian · After Blair’s bombshell, will Labour stick with or abandon net zero?By Fiona Harvey

"The fracturing of the consensus [on #ClimateCrisis] has been far more profound at what we'd call 'elite level' rather than at public level”

Rightwing parties #Reform and #Tories want to create division over #NetZero because it has been for some time their next culture war.

Where there is division, there are potential votes and causes to attach party loyalty to that are wider reaching than bashing migrants and trans folk.

Day 32 🗳️💨

Things are coming in thick and fast today, so I’ll try to summarise the major themes.

No Policies of the #Liberal, #LNP and #Coalition.

#AngusTaylor (Opposition Treasurer, Liberal) hands in his #Economics homework late, it’s got problems.

A 🎃 derivative that is toxic ☢️

“A Coalition government would drive the #budget deeper into #deficit over the coming two years, as the shadow finance minister, #JaneHume, insisted her party’s plan to save $17.2bn by #slashing the number of #Canberra-based #PublicServants by 41,000 through “natural attrition” was achievable.”

If returned to power, the Coalition would gut a long list of environment and clean energy programs, including #scrapping the #NetZero #Economy #Agency, reversing Labor’s #TaxBreaks for #ElectricVehicles, and redirecting money slated for the #HomeBatteries program.

#Reversing tax incentives for green hydrogen would save $1.5bn over four years, and not proceeding with Labor’s critical mineral production tax credits would save $1.2bn, the Coalition’s election policy costings show.”
