OK #BlackMastodon, #MuseumTech, #DigitalHumanities and #BlackHistory enthusiasts - I've got a special ask!

I'm doing some research on ways of communicating trans-Atlantic histories of the African diaspora and would dearly love more feedback and thoughts.

Basically you'll be asked to compare two layouts for content from museum and archive collections -

If you're up for it, please start here: forms.gle/AUGUvyne6pyVLkS2A

And of course do share :)

Google DocsExploring black history through online contentThank you for giving your time to participate in this session. Museum X is a museum and archives collective exploring ways of sharing Black history. We are conducting research into different ways of showcasing stories from GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) collections. You will be shown two versions of an online experience that explores black history. For each version, you don't have to read everything, although there will be prompts encouraging you to explore the content. However, you only need to read as much as you are interested in. After each version, you will be asked to fill in a short survey to tell us what you think. Once you have seen both versions and submitted your feedback for both of them, you will then be asked additional questions to compare your experiences. If you have arrived here through SurveyCircle, you will receive points for your participation, which can be used to recruit free survey participants at SurveyCircle.com. However, points can only be given after visiting both versions and completing the final survey. The session will at most take about 15 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us design@themuseumx.com, or through our website.

We are seeking a specialized technical consultant to develop a strategic plan for enhancing communication across IBRAM-#Museus’s digital services. The focus will be on interoperability with decentralized social networks (#Fediverse), leveraging the #ActivityPub plugin for #WordPress, which is currently integrated into the #Tainacan platform.

The Art Institute of Chicago has developed a bash script, "aic-bash," that queries its API for public domain artworks and renders them as ASCII art.
The project showcases the capabilities of the museum's open access API, which provides data on artworks, artists, and more. The script allows users to retrieve and display ASCII art of artworks based on various queries.

This innovative pipeline by Franz Koeferl, Matthias Zuerl, Jitin Jami, Jindong Li, Dario Zanca and Bjoern Eskofier aims to replace labor-intensive or expensive setups by offering an integrated solution. While detection and localization performance show promise, further refinement is crucial for large-scale application, especially in scenarios with multiple visitors in close proximity. #VisitorResearch #MuseumTech #Innovation

Ana Müller, Michael Schiffmann, Anke Neumeister and Anja Richert’s study explores the integration of social robots in museums, emphasizing real-world conditions. Visitors seek convenient information retrieval, posing challenges in developing robots with conversational skills and comprehensive knowledge. As social robots become integral in public spaces, understanding the balance between accuracy and control is pivotal for meaningful interactions. #SocialRobots #MuseumTech #HumanRobotInteraction

CHIM—Chatbot in the Museum is a project exploring speech-based AI in museum education. This #opensource prototype transforms traditional museum guides. Born from the desire to address specific questions that arise during museum visits, CHIM envisions a participatory and engaging approach to cultural exploration. It represents a step forward in leveraging AI for encouraging visitor participation, write Oliver Gustke, Stefan Schaffer and Aaron Ruß. #MuseumTech #AIinEducation #CHIMProject

@sonjathiel and @epoz explore how AI enhances user engagement with museum collections. #xCurator utilizes AI to personalize user experiences, suggesting objects based on individual interests. Machine learning, image recognition, and intelligent search technologies deepen collection exploration. The tool also encourages user interaction with large language models, potentially empowering them to curate and share their stories. #AI #MuseumTech #DigitalCuration

OK, so got an online design jam coming up 16th-18th November, exploring intersection of design justice, community centred/civic service design and GLAM data.

Sound interesting? Know people who'd be interested?

EventbriteAlbertopolis online Gov Jam: GLAM editionPart of the 2023 Global Gov Jam, join us for three evenings of collaborative design exploring service design, museums and design justice.

Any examples of accessible AND innovative/intriguing online collections design? Whether for Museums, online galleries, libraries, independent craft shops?

Some visually inspiring (but not especially accessible) examples from me:

Had a very encouraging chat with a colleague working in access to museum collections and archives who was interested in my tech and service design angle.

It got me thinking about ways of pressuring GLAM institutions to better share and document their APIs/collection access interfaces, which made me realise if it's tough for internal staff, how is your average community leader or educator going to know who to contact from this: nhm.ac.uk/contact-us.html
