In a world gone mad, I have to start my day with some grace, however small.
Good morning.

Coffee this morning is extra bitter; I’ve no idea why—I make it the same way every morning. I take my coffee black nowadays. In a previous decade, I would add a little sweetener, and the decade before that, sugar. How the world turns. Wasn’t that a soap opera? Or maybe it was As the World Turns. I never really paid attention to the soaps, even back in the day. Except for Dark Shadows—that one was different. It had vampires and witches, with all the drama and situations of real life. It ran during all of my high school years, so truthfully, I didn’t watch that often, but for a while one summer, I got caught up in the show. A long time ago.
"Some soap opera, you know, real people pretending to be fake people with made-up problems being watched by real people to forget their real problems." – Chuck Palahniuk
Morning twilight trio in a deep blue sky.
Waning crescent moon, with earthshine, in upper right corner.
Brilliant Venus in upper left quadrant.
Saturn is below and right of Venus, nearer the trees, and considerably fainter...looks somewhat orange.
And there are some fainter stars visible.
Tomorrow the moon will be lower, and also to the left of Venus. That will make for a tight grouping down low. I'll try to capture Mercury as it rises in bright twilight. (Mercury is not in this morning's photo.)
Mornings are chaotic neutral.
I will not be taking any questions.
Good morning, friends.

Here I am again, alone with my thoughts—or at least trying to think. Yet all I can seem to focus on is the fact that I’m alone with my thoughts. It’s a tough cycle to break, especially in the mornings. Back in 1996, when my wife and I were both stationed in the Republic of Korea, we took mid-tour leave over Christmas and flew to Waikiki, Hawaii. We stayed at the Hale Koa Hotel, an exclusive yet affordable beachfront retreat for active-duty and retired military members. The hotel offered everything—beach access, a pool, a tiki bar, the works. Reservations were booked months in advance, but I got lucky when someone canceled at the last minute, and just like that, we were in. We flew Korean Air out of Seoul to Honolulu and back. Last-minute luck led to tropical holiday bliss.

For some reason, Freddie and the Dreamers, a British band, popped into my head this morning. They had one number one hit in the USA in 1965: I'm Telling You Now, written by Mitch Murray and Freddie Garrity. Here's a snippet of the song's lyrics:
'I'm telling you now I'm telling you right away I'll be saying for many a day I'm in love with you now...'
The band also popularized their own quirky dance, The Freddy, which was a lively and playful take on uncoordinated jumping jacks. They also released a song called Do the Freddy that seemed great at the time, but after listening to it again, well... tastes evolve.
"The British invasion certainly made a lot of noise in the record industry." – Jeff Barry

Another beautiful sunrise from the shores of Lake Michigan, which seems more like one of the Great Inland Seas. Every morning, watching these sunrises the likes of which I've not seen since childhood on the Eastern Seaboard, feels like being at the Atlantic ocean.
How about some science curiosity...
> During the middle Pleistocene era, the area now submerged under the Great Lakes had been a lowland river system. As glaciers advanced and retreated they carved these areas into the Great Lakes and filled them as they melted.
> The preservation of fossils in Michigan resumed when the last glaciers withdrew from the state. Between 17,000 and 13,000 years ago, much of Michigan's icy covering had disappeared.
> After the glaciers melted much of the state was covered in large lakes made of glacial meltwater. By 10,000 years ago many of these lakes had dried. Forests of spruce and fir grew on the newly exposed terrain.
> - The Pleistocene (plaɪstəˌsiːn), referred to colloquially as the Ice Age, is the geological epoch that lasted from c. 2.58 million to 11,700 years ago, spanning the Earth's most recent period of repeated glaciations.
>
> - The Cenozoic Era (siːnəˈzoʊ.ɪk, lit. 'new life') is Earth's current geological era, representing the last 66 million years of Earth's history.
