🌺Really enjoyed our postponed from last summer getaway to Maui last week. It was especially a nice reprieve from the anxiety inducing fires and inauguration b.s. that was happening. Here’s a clip snorkeling with a turtle with phone in a waterproof bag. A highlight of the trip!🤙🏻Aloha!

Why is prolonged #drought a problem for Maui? In my photo I shared, you can see a large mountain that is covered in invasive grasses that are highly flammable. It was just a year ago that Maui had the devastating series of fires that reduced Lahaina to charred rubble. We are just as vulnerable to another serious #wildfire event as we were in the summer of 2023. Frontline had a fantastic #documentary that covered the #Lahaina fire.

"“Something is there.”

... a mixture of toxic chemicals and microscopic particles that urban #wildfires create and carry in their #smoke. As the wind-driven fire swept through much of #Lahaina, killing 100 people, it incinerated cars, gas stations, electronics, metals and plastics. Those smoke plumes blew into dozens of homes that didn’t burn down, and their components can cause an array of #health issues, including brain tumors and cancer."

After these huge disasters, #landgrabs are common. We see it after #iniki we see it after #maui fires in #lahaina and on #bigisland when the lava flows. #landback
The way these communities survive and thrive *together* thru these natural disasters, only to be ripped apart when the land is taken from them. They thrived bc they were "allowed" to take care of themselves. When you take away people's ability to take care of themselves... you are condemning them to a poverty deeper than the Pacific Ocean. It's a crime against humanity.

The nonpartisan group targets regulations and fees that could be removed or waived to more quickly help displaced residents The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii has released a second policy brief regarding how to speed up homebuilding on Maui in the wake of the deadly August 2023 wildfires that killed 102 people in Lahaina and left […]
