A Solar #Eclipse Painting from the 1700s
1735 painting by Cosmas Damian Asam, possibly the earliest realistic solar eclipse depiction with corona and diamond ring effect, inspired by eclipses from 1706-1733. St. Benedict is shown observing. It hangs in Weltenburg Abbey, Germany.

A total solar #eclipse was visible OTD in 1715 across northern Europe and northern Asia, as predicted by Edmond Halley to within 4 minutes accuracy https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/chile/eclipse/?s=mb #travel #astronomy
It's talking, Merry! The tree is talking!

"Basically, we are watching the famous 'wood wide web' in action."
"We now see the forest not as a mere collection of individuals, but as an orchestra of phase-correlated plants.
Professor Gagliano said the findings support calls for the preservation of wise old trees."
Treebeard approves.

#Moon Mountains Magnified during Ring of Fire #Eclipse
During a 2020 annular eclipse, dark streaks appeared in a composite image. These are the magnified shadows of lunar mountains. The "ring of fire" is sunlight around the Moon's edge, with Baily's Beads shining where light passes through valleys. Only visible in Earth's Eastern Hemisphere.

Eclipse Heat Map, 5000 Years
It's evident from the heatmap that a total solar eclipse can happen absolutely anywhere on Earth. In fact, there isn't a single pixel in the map that isn't visited by at least one eclipse – not a single goose egg in any of the 14.6 million points sampled by the map.
What they don't tell you about total solar eclipses is the sky darkens right over you, and at the horizon you see a sunrise/sunset effect...only it's in every direction. Truly breathtaking. My capture of a particularly sublime one on April 8, 2024: "Ultimate Shadow".

Tonight's supermoon will appear larger and slightly brighter than usual before fading to red during a total lunar eclipse. This phenomenon, also called a Wolf Moon, occurs when the fully lit Moon enters Earth's shadow, casting a dim red hue due to atmospheric scattering. Best viewed from the Americas post-sunset.

A #Lunar #Eclipse Over an Indian Peace Pagoda
Last week, the Moon turned red due to a total lunar eclipse. A mosaic image shows its phases over New Delhi's Shanti Stupa. The red hue results from Earth's atmosphere scattering blue light but refracting red onto the Moon. Each eclipse varies with atmospheric conditions. Next one: 2014.

Last week I missed the one year anniversary of seeing my first total eclipse. This iPhone picture doesn’t measure up at all with what you could see with your naked eye but it was really cool to see.#eclipse #photography #nature

One year ago today I experienced and filmed my first total solar #eclipse in Mexico.
Not sure when/where I'll get to see one again. It was so magical I feel compelled to try.
A little tempted to try for Iceland or Spain next year. Or maybe Gibraltar or North Africa in 2027. I've always wanted to see Morocco or Tunisia, so perhaps one of those would work out well.
And Japan in 2035 feels like a must-do. I have no excuse with 10yrs of time to prep and save for the experience.
Seeing notes in my stream about the #Eclipse one year ago today.
I'm of two minds about "life-changing events." I find that little day-to-day things can be life changing; a brief chat with someone can be a thing you obsess about for years. A random Tuesday observation can stick with you for a lifetime.
But in a more monumental way, going to Montreal, just a couple of hours away, for the Eclipse last year, and seeing it in a park with a few hundred ppl was truly a life-changing experience.
One year ago... #weather is what you get. Forecasted storms were late, cleared just enough just in time to see #SolarEclipse2024 totality in Mesquite TX. Since cumulus clouds grow with daytime solar heating, the partial eclipse leading up to totality apparently cooled the air enough to inhibit them. Not everyone was as lucky that day. Spring is unpredictable - actual cloud cover along the path of totality differed from average expectations. https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237121736018901 #eclipse #astronomy #travel
