There is a sort of comforting but disheartening feeling in seeing the ways you've built your life for decades in the "things to try now that the world is suddenly bad" lists. Credit unions, nonprofit co-ops, reuse and repair hobbies, #eatlocal. Like, that's nice, but I opened this page for directions to address a need for *doing more*. Working on sitting with it.
Signed up for Community Supported Agriculture produce farm share for another season.
The technical improvements to the process are impressive. Ten years ago, it was you get what you get, once a week, big or small share, bring your own bag. For the past few, it's been weekly or biweekly, S,M,L, user preferences saved, notifications two days out to adjust your share among what is available, an online calendar to skip or reschedule, veggies bagged up in compostable plastic with your personalized label stickered on. All with a mobile friendly web portal that seems built for many farms the same way a few carry out platforms service every small restaurant in your neighborhood.
If you got turned off dealing with a CSA years ago, it's a really good time to try again. #shoplocal #eatlocal
You know you can tax the rich right now, right? Just shift where you spend your money.
Support your local coffee shop instead of a big chain. Shop at farmers' markets. Eat at local restaurants. Buy from mom-and-pop stores. Choose independent brands over corporate giants.
Yes, it might cost a little more, but you're redirecting money away from corporations that thrive on low wages and putting it straight into your community—where it can grow, support jobs, and build something better.
You are effectively taxing the rich.
Took Cardamummy to an appt & she wanted a sweet afterwards. Funny how Aura-La was on the route home!
One cream cookie to split.
The lodger and I will have carrot cakes for dessert.
And that poor orange cardamom babka was crying because it was all alone, so I rescued it.

I ate 2 lbs of manilla #clams by myself over last weekend. My dipping sauces: nuoc cham & finely minced garlic with butter.
Thrifty Foods on Admirals Rd. sells farmed manilla clams from the Fanny Bay Seafood company up island.
This week’s scones. Gunn’s Hill Oxford Harvest and jalapeno.
I picked up a Hawaiian dog from The Hot Dog Guys in Tillicum Mall, on my way home from work, today. It was really good. I got some of their yummy pineapple dolewhip dessert too.
They started out their local small business from a food truck. They still operate a food truck in the Langford area.

Now would be a good time to bring back eating local. D and I tried this 100 mile diet out some years ago. At the time, it was with the climate crisis in mind which is still a good reason to try it. It was difficult when we lived in BC but it should be a breeze in Southern Ontario
At Lemolo, one of the few local restaurants I've never eaten at. My friend picked it. I'm waiting for her, drinking a chai latte and trying to decide what looks best on their huge blackboard menu. #SkipTheFastFood #EatLocal
I am making bison bone broth today. I buy directly from a bison farmer, and the bones are quite cheap. I am of the opinion that if you are going to eat meat, avoid the feedlot mafia, and try and get meat that actually benefits the environment. Bison has a major role in a healthy prairie ecosystem. Also, buy local.
I saw a few people online asking where to get local fresh produce. Which might seem like an oxymoron up where I am in winter, but it doesn't have to be. We can do this!!

I was "in the field" (doing research) with folks in the Ottawa valley who produce and source organic foods locally in 2019. People talked about connections with others, environmental issues in production and transportation, health issues, and food security/food sovereignty. I am thinking about those people now as we enter this trade war. They are ready. They have tapped into the bounty locally - and there is bounty! Check out your local farmers!
These prices will take away from the distributors' bottom line, they will pass that loss on to their customers and then to consumers.
We need to #EatSeasonally and #EatLocal
Acknowledging that there's a lot of privilege behind this sentiment, almost everyone can make better choices on where you buy your food as well as what you buy. Plus you can lessen the enrichment of the billionaires that own some of those companies. #SupportLocalFarms #FarmersMarket #VoteWithYourWallet
