Getting caught up on stuff I fell behind on while teaching that extra #AdultESOL class January to March.

For example, finally finished a script for #Google Sheets that will create Forms in the given languages automagically. Easiest way I know of to get multilingual Forms.

Next, a Sheets script to create Forms and email to editors and respondents.

Then, I'll create the diplomas in #Scribus. Use #ScribusGenerator (github.com/berteh/ScribusGener) to "mail merge" them.

EASE Nordic webinar: English as the lingua franca of academic publishing
Tues 25 March, 3.30pm CET / 2.30pm GMT

English is academic publishing's lingua franca, but English is the second language for most people in Nordic countries. How do English and Nordic languages influence each other? Has Nordic language culture changed due to this?

I dread facing my English learner and friend Iryna next week. I’m part of the collective American betrayal of her country. My past 3 English learners have been Ukrainian and all three have made the most of their temporary protection by the U.S. to work, care for their children, and contribute to their communities. We are sending them back to misery and perhaps life under a hostile government.

ELT is not representative of all identities.

LGBTQIA+ identities are human identities, along with race, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, Global South, and more, many of which intersect.

Without allies and people coming together to collectively speak up, there will be no change. Individuals working on their own may make a big noise, but are very unlikely to make an impact when it comes to inclusion.

The open letter is just one way to show solidarity, so here's what you can do:
- sign the letter (and don't forget to verify your email)
- share the letter, particularly in ELT/ESOL/EFL circles and groups (I'm no longer on Facebook or Instagram, so can't share there directly)
- if you have a newsletter, or mailing list, I'd be most grateful if you'd share the link there
- if you'd like me (Peter) to write something for a blog, a newsletter or an online (or print) publication, get in contact at admin@iamnotataboo.com

To be fair, it later says (with a strong trill)

My point is that even the single r doesn’t equate between these languages. In American English, we pronounce “r” in the back of our throats. A Spanish “r” is essentially how U.S. Americans pronounce the “tt” in butter - tongue pushing off that ridge behind your teeth. I am curious to know the history here

This is something I’m increasingly becoming frustrated at in my industry.

English Language Teaching, or #ELT, #ESOL, #TEFL, #ESL is dominated by cis white, non-disabled, neurotypical, heterosexual, Global North values and ideals. Even all the plenary sessions at this year’s #IATEFL will be all white (#ELTSoWhite) - and I’m fed up of hearing my own voice, and other cis white Global North voices.

This is why trying to reach underrepresented communities via the #blog is so important to me.

Ideally, I’d love to have guest blogs from one or more of the following communities, intersectional or not:
- trans, non-binary, gender fluid
- Black, non- white
- disabled
- neurodivergent
- Global South
- any sexuality not heterosexual

It would help if you worked, or studied, in ELT - however, not essential. I’d also be interested in having stories of educational experience as a #Queer person in your country, and your experience and consequences of not seeing yourself represented in lesson materials. I want to show what invisibility does to the Queer community in education.

If you feel you can, please do get in touch via the website - and also please share to communities that I’m unable to reach. Thank you.

Vivaldi SocialI am not a taboo! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ (@iamnotataboo@vivaldi.net)This is part of the newsletter that I've just sent out: One thing I'm trying to do with I am not a taboo! is build a community, particularly in ELT for 2SLGBTQIA+ educators, students and allies. (This may expand in the future because NO marginalised identity is a taboo). I've noticed for a long time that the Queer movement in ELT is mainly represented by cis white people (mainly men) from the Global North - and it's the same voices heard over and over again - mine included. I feel that there's a divide in the Queer ELT community - those that speak up but are not given the platforms or space to be heard; those that do not want to speak up (fully respected), and those that are always heard. Where is the space for those that want to be heard but aren't given the opportunity? (Here, I'm not talking about academic spaces, but easy-to-access spaces). #ELT #ESOL #ESL #LGBTQIA #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion https://iamnotataboo.com/blog-submissions/

Short week for #k12 classes this week. Struggled to get my #HighSchool #EnglishLearners to free read today, but I expect that is mostly down to a 2-day week and it being Friday.

Prepping for #AdultESOL. Got a lot done during the 2 days off for weather, but now have to redo the course calendar that I just redid b/c we missed class on Tuesday. We missed Thursday also, for non-weather reasons, and so the redone calendar needs to be re-redone. Good chance to teach prefixes, at least.
