Euler–Mascheroni constant! :euler:

In fact, the last one is:
1+dx (1x1x)=γ0.5772156649

Equivalently,
limn(k=1n1klnn)=γ=0.5772156649
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unsolved problem in mathematics:
Is Euler–Mascheroni constant irrational? If so, is it transcendental?

#Dark #energy was assumed to be a #constant force in the universe, both currently and throughout cosmic history.

But new data suggest that it may be more changeable, growing stronger or weaker over time, reversing or even fading away.

“As #Biden would say, it’s a B.F.D.,” said #Adam #Riess, an astronomer at Johns Hopkins University and the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
Riess shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics with two other astronomers for the discovery of dark energy, but was not involved in this new study.

“It may be the first real clue we have gotten about the nature of dark energy in 25 years,” he said.

If the work of dark energy were constant over time, it would eventually push all the stars and galaxies so far apart that even atoms could be torn asunder, sapping the universe of all life, light, energy and thought.
Instead, it appears, dark energy is capable of changing course and pointing the cosmos toward a richer future.

Wendy Freedman, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago who has led efforts to measure the expansion of the universe, praised the new survey as “superb data.”

The results, she said, “open the potential for a new window into understanding dark energy, the dominant component of the universe, which remains the biggest mystery in cosmology

What's Catalan's G?

G = 0.915965594177219015054603514932384110774…

Eugene Charles Catalan published a memoir on it in 1865. It is related to Dirichlet's beta function, which is the algebraic continuation of this sum:

β(s)=n=0inf1n(2n1)s

This looks a lot like the corresponding sum for the Riemann zeta function!

ζ(s)=n=0inf1ns

β has interesting values for integer arguments, some simpler, others outright ethereal. See here for more examples:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirichle

Catalan's constant G appears as the value of β(2):

𝐺=β(2)

But that's not the only way to calculate G! Wikipedia lists well over a dozen integral expressions to compute G!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan%

G also pops up in expressions for values of the second polygamma function, or the inverse tangent integral, a function Ramanujan liked to play with.

It is currently unknown wether G is transcendental, or even rational! Here's a continued fraction expression:

1/(1+1^4/(8+3^4/(16+5^4/(24+7^4/(32+9^4/( ... ))))))

If G is rational, then the simple continued fraction, which can be obtained by rewriting the previous expression in such a way that all numerators are 1, must end at some place. The most recent computation by Seungmin Kim got up to 1,200,000,000,100 digits, and apparently no such simple pattern has showed up!

But G has also geometric meaning: It is 1/4 of the volume of an ideal hyperbolic octahedraon! Or combinatoric significance, as it appears in the counting of spanning trees and some other objects!

And it's used in models for computing the mass distribution of spiral galaxies!

Workshop #DEDBUG by Maurits Fennis of @unbinare at #Constant studio #Brussels 27-28/05/2023 :boost_requested:

In 2019 alone, 83% of electronic waste had been shipped to the global south, with massive environmental consequences. This amount of unprocessed waste is only set to increase, growing from 53.6 Mt of #E-Waste in 2019 to an estimated 110 Mt by 2050. A large percentage of the devices shipped to the global south have very small components, called #SMD (surface-mounted device) components. The #DEDBUG toolkit by Unbinare revives and facilitates free-form, point-to-point construction techniques for small, surface-mount components salvaged from electronic waste, allowing for the construction of circuits without the requirement to design a #PCB beforehand. Each participant will receive a DEDBUG toolkit and basic electronics tools to experiment with at home. The kit will also be donated to workers in the informal sector surrounding waste management sites throughout the Global South.

📢 "Constant launches two open calls in the framework of the thematic year around the topic 'Techno-disobedience':

If civil disobedience illustrates how one can and should disobey a law they consider unjust, technological disobedience is posed here as a question: what obligations do we feel are put forward by Big Tech and what it could mean to disagree, refuse, disobey them?

➡️ Call for participation at the work-session: constantvzw.org/site/Open-call

➡️ Call for proposal for an artistic commission: constantvzw.org/site/Open-call

Deadline for both calls: Monday 1 May 2023" ⌛
