"Tiny Forest documentary about the effects of the Miyawaki method in the Netherlands" [9:55 min]
by IVN Natuureducatie

youtube.com/watch?v=LyHVQtDtlM

Quote by IVNN:
"Feb 17, 2021
In December 2015 IVN Natuureducatie invited TED-talk speaker Shubhendu Sharma to the Netherlands for a special initiative: we planted our very first Tiny Forest. Together with Sharma, the municipality of Zaandam, Hoek Gardener, school children and local residents we planted the first Tiny Forest, right in the center of the town Zaandam.
A Tiny Forests® is a densely packed native forests, that fits into the size of a tennis court. The forest is not just an pleasant spot for butterflies, birds, bees and small mammals; it is a great place for people too. In the outdoor classroom, children learn about nature and it also serves as a meeting place for the local community.
We created a documentary about the effects of the Miyawaki method in the Netherlands. Did it work? Watch the video and find out.

I'm getting fed up with the *tsunami* of awful articles about USA, Trump, Gaza, racism, anti LGBTQI, misogyny, crime, corruption, trade, tariffs, environment, animal extinction, polar ice melting, ICE raids, wars ...

We need links and advice about what we the ordinary ppl can actually DO to be proactive and help.

Every day Im left hanging, emotionally wiped out, bc it's all so much and i feel SO FRIGGIN POWERLESS. And governments aren't doing what needs to be done.
Am i the only one ??
How can i help ??

9:35 Trams encourage development
11:59 Trams make urban places better
15:58 Trams improve pedestrianised places
14:52 Metros also fit well in great urban places
16:05 Streetcars were replaced with subways
17:42 Trams and metros have different purposes
19:21 Trams can be faster than metros
21:01 Buses are not a replacement for trams
23:45 Trams are better for cycling
25:16 BRTs are problematic
27:26 Your city should not be building a BRT
29:49 Trams are not "in the way"
31:16 We need to properly fund public transit
32:51 Toronto streetcars are terrible
33:25 City with good trams reap the benefits

Americans always react denying the possibility of #CyclingInfrastructure in the US.
Blaming everything but themselves.
Not being able to see it.
Given an opportunity they see short term profit for the already wealthy instead of long term welfare and health for every one.
This was done by a Republican Mayor and everybody is happy.

[Ep. 1025] The city of Carmel, Indiana, is exceptionally people- and cycling-friendly, defying stereotypes for a Midwestern conservative-led small city. Even though it is also still quite car centric, its streetscapes do demonstrate that building livable cities can transcend political divides.
But how does Carmel fare in my Dutch eyes? I travelled from the Netherlands to Indiana to experience cycling in Carmel firsthand."

"The UK's Stunning Grid Flip From Coal Giant to Clean Energy Leader (feat. ‪@JustHaveaThink‬)" [19:40 min]
by Engineering with Rosie

youtube.com/watch?v=NHNC0_sRvf

Quote by EwR:
"Apr 27, 2025
This autumn, for the first time ever, the UK is expecting to run entirely on zero-emissions electricity for a few hours. That doesn’t just mean a sunny day with loads of solar and wind and some exports to the neighbours—that’s happened before. But even during those times, gas power was still online, helping keep the grid stable.
This time, the goal is no gas, no coal, no oil—and no electricity imports. Just clean, homegrown electricity. It’s a big milestone—and a taste of what a fully zero-emissions grid could look like.
40 years ago, coal made up three-quarters of the UK’s electricity. Even 15 years ago, it was still mostly fossil-fuelled, but with gas instead of coal.
So how did they get from that… to here? And what would it take to go from a few hours of clean electricity… to 24/7/365? And beyond electricity—what else needs to happen to get to a fully zero-emissions economy?
To help me understand how the UK pulled this off—and what’s next—I’ve brought in some local expertise: David Borlace, from ‪@JustHaveaThink‬."

On of my guilty pleasures is watching reaction videos on YT.
Basking in the praise of my own society 😘 [I'm Dutch]
Being a bit cocky I also like to write my own reactions to the reaction.
And now I share on Mastodon, how's that for a Droste-effect 🔄 ?

---> What New York Could Learn From Amsterdam’s Streets <- [12:49 min]
---> youtube.com/watch?v=41WSPGunLOI <-

youtube.com/watch?v=Tu_VNhhk3A

6 Lessons for teacher Paul [UK]

1st lesson: don't tell NYers what to do... The lesson, proven time and time again: create it and they will come. Create safe and fast infrastructure all over town and the bikers will show up, and be happy. [Not cultural at all, more like car brain at the helm.}

2nd lesson: Amsterdam has a long time history of POLITICAL WILL on safety and opposed, so called, faster cars. Later on public health was added to that WILL: less emission [pollution] and less noise.

3rd lesson: take traffic design seriously. That means the theory has to be adapted to new things learned. In the US, as far as I know, traffic design often works with far outdated data. And the study is averse to that adaptation. I wonder why ? Car brain ?

4th lesson; at 8:12 you did get an useful idea about the car industry's history. Why don't YOU fact check that ! Giving others your own homework, or is that what teachers do ? 😋

5th lesson: there is no one key to fix it all. not even public transport. That's a common US problem: not being able to go slow but ALL IN. Always looking for the quick and easy fix !

6th lesson: the Dutch are not skinny ! They are healthy, eaten fresh food as well as cycling.

Conclusion: What ARE the good thing of NY traffic [the point of the video], huh ? Record deadths, pollution ? Hurray !

Living in the Netherlands this is normal for me [all be it exceptional].
I used to commute to work on bike. No drivers license. Owning 3 bikes. One for urban traffic, to the train station. One for leisure. And the last at the trainstation of my workplace.
Would that was possible for every one.
Remember: 'If you build it, they will come' As it goes for bicycles it also goes for cars.

Why build bike lanes — shouldn’t we focus on public transit instead? There’s a criticism we’ve seen that bicycle urbanism is a niche obsession and that urbanists’ attention should instead be on public transit as a more robust, reliable, and realistic alternative to driving."

Climate change is hitting cacao farms hard, leading to shortages in chocolate's raw ingredient. Every chocolate company is desperate as the price of cocoa beans has quadrupled after remaining relatively stable for decades. But there is hope. California Cultured is one of several firms aiming to mass-produce chocolate in vats using cell culture technology. New Scientist managed to get hold of a small sample and, in true scientific endeavour, did a blind taste test to see how it compares."

"Apr 13, 2025
Rooftop solar PV is THE best way to reduce your household energy bills (alongside good insulation of course!). But the technology is woefully underutilised on a global basis, especially in regions that have the best sunshine, like Africa. Now a new report has crunched some numbers and calculated the climate mitigation potential of all those unused roofs around the world. And it's quite the impact!"
