@osma

"but it's a #publicBenefitCorporation"

that has no legal bite

it means a company *may* pursue nebulously defined "public benefit" instead of profit

it doesn't *have* to

"but it's #decentralized"

in theory

like #cryptocurrency hype (#bluesky is owned by #crypto bros) they promise a lot and deliver very little, and #FOMO dum dums buy into the promise rather than the reality

it's only a matter of when, not if, the crypto bro owners of bluesky do to bluesky what #musk did to #twitter

Implications: Bluesky Blocking Turkish User (7 of 7)

As we go forward, we should take this case very seriously. Right now people all over the world are joining "decentralized" #Bluesky under some misguided belief that it is a digital safe haven. This episode clearly demonstrates that it is not.

Implications: Bluesky Blocking Turkish User (6 of 7)

So, what we are seeing is a real life example of why truly distributed networks based on protocols and not platforms are inherently much more robust and defensible from external pressures and control.

In this case, #Bluesky has very few options. It can refuse the Turkish request and risk the myriad potential pressures a nation can bring down on a relatively small corporation, or they can accede to the demand. It's not even close.

Implications: Bluesky Blocking Turkish User (3 of 7)

#Bluesky uses a different protocol called AT Protocol. It gets a bit complicated, but for all intensive purposes there is only one platform on this protocol, Bluesky. So, if Bluesky gets shut down or blocks a user, that's it, there is no alternative for users. This is what seems to have happened.

Let's look at what might have transpired on truly decentralized Mastodon in the same scenario...

@sanana @chris "... some are claiming #Bluesky is also censoring them. But here’s the truth:

- Bluesky is not banning Turkish users or content.
- If you can see the accounts from outside #Turkey (or via VPN), Bluesky is not the one doing the blocking.
- The Turkish government is likely forcing ISPs to block certain pages or even the entire platform - which returns HTTP 451 errors (“unavailable for legal reasons”).

Confirmation: Bluesky Now Blocking User In Turkey In Response To Turkish Demands

Yesterday Arda Kılıçdağı @arda posted (micro.arda.pw/@arda/1143442610) that #Bluesky had blocked a user in response to Turkish pressure, and published the purported notification.

Today, he confirmed the block by demonstrating that the subject account is still visible in the rest of the world, but blocked in Turkey (see below and micro.arda.pw/@arda/1143480854). Independently confirmed by @aral (mastodon.ar.al/@aral/114348113).

On a decentralized social network, your government has to go after every independent local server that wants to post the stuff they don't want you to see. And you can always use a foreign server accessing that content on foreign servers that they can't touch. The government has to shut down every way you have to access those servers outside the country. #SocialWeb

On #bluesky, they just have to ask/threaten the company running the relay for the entire service to block access in your country.

Once and for all.

#BlueSky is a #FalseSolution.
Just like 'Climate Smart Agriculture' or Redd+ is.

None of these are meant to solve any issues.
All these are ways and means to stop anyone from challenging corporate power. All these are ways to maintain the status quo.

So fall for real solutions.

Dear #Fediverse and #Marketing people,

What do you recommend as Social Media Manager solutions? I am searching for apps that are really supporting @Mastodon and @bsky.app and possibly the emerging @PixelFed @loops etc...

I have tested @bufferapp that has early integrated #Mastodon, but I am not convinced (not active on Mastodon actually). I started a few weeks ago #Metricool. but they do not connect to Fediverse yet. Both supports #Bluesky. Having #LinkedIn is good too.
