This is a Common Yellowthroat, And although, when I took this picture a year ago it was the first one I had ever seen, it turns out that they are indeed common. They are everywhere and yet I somehow was completely oblivious to their existence for the three decades I've lived here. It really makes me wonder if there are griffins and goblins regularly ambling down the sidewalks and I've just never noticed.

A very lucky shot this afternoon! Two species that are often mistaken for each other - a male purple finch on the left - and a male house finch on the right.

The photo shows a tall, cylindrical feeder with sunflower seed. The background is a reddish wooden fence. Peeking out from the left is a finch with a pinkish-red head and breast. On the right is finch with a large red patch on its breast and a partially red head, mainly the top of the head and the chin. The rest is a pale brown colour.

A few of my star City Nature Challenge birds, today in Prospect Park. Kentucky Warbler, Least Bittern, American Bittern. The two Bitterns were amazingly out in the open and nearby!

Life Among the Leaves

This is a downy woodpecker, Dryobates pubescens. I captured this image a couple of years ago and was thrilled when the bird ventured closer than they usually do in this area.
