#WordWeavers Apr 25: How long does it typically take you to draft a novel?

Maybe a bit more than a year?

But I've now written enough of these things that we can figure it out empirically! It's been about five years since 2020, when I started the Book With No Humans Because. I finished that one, plus three others, plus half the current WIP. ~5.3 years / 4.5 books = 1.2 years per book.

Sounds about right!

Quick thought: Women of the lower classes were plain (Miss Bates, Fanny Price, Anne Eliot) while women of middle class (Elizabeth Bennet, Catherine Morland) are pretty enough, while women of the upper classes were beautiful (Emma). Thoughts?

Indie marketing strategies

I do, but too often I forget & lose faith. Of course, it’s possible I’ve written a good book no one wants to read.

Regardless, it goes like this:

• Take the long view…patience
• Write a good book
• Keep the price accessible
• Be accessible via social media & blog
• Add books, create a collection
* “Books sell books, more books sell more books.”
• Depend on word-of-mouth from a select few
• Keep patiently writing

“the classics” as inspiration

When introduced to classic writers like Shakespeare, Austen, Hawthorne, Cather, Dickens, & so on, it blew me away. Influence me? How could they not?

Their ghosts lurk in my writing, in-particular one Hawthorne story.

The thread, for me, was a level of humanity that has faded. If there’s anything I hope has rubbed off on me, that’s it. Ever since, my own characters are more real to me.

Welp, Let's see. I started my (one) novel about 12 years ago. Just finished it. Now I have to reread, edit and tighten up my details. I write a lot. I just don't really ever get anywhere on something big.

It seems to me that the working class is addressed in two ways by the media generally...

Got the last beta feedback on Wednesday, am now proofreading the entire thing via read-out-loud ... and meanwhile, my to-do list is exploding.

I really, really need to remind myself to do things slow, one at a time...
