An exciting free talk by past APS speaker Sally Hurst! This time she'll be discussing the opalised dinosaur fossils of Lightning Ridge. This is a free event!

Her November talk on the Found a Fossil project was fascinating, so I'm sure this one will be as well!

I would die to go to The Three Sisters, in #Alberta, #Canada 🇨🇦 . The #CanadianRockies are simply stunning. I'm in love with Canada.

I had forgotten how poignant the movie Brokeback Mountain was until my professor, today, started talking about the novel by Annie Proulx and the movie directed by Ann Lee (2005). That was the year when the same-sex marriage law was passed, both in Canada and in #Spain. It allowed couples of the same sex to legally enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples.

When I watched the movie back then, I was shocked. It was unthinkable to see two rough men exploring their emotional and sexual orientation in the midst of a hostile dominant homophobic culture. #LGBTQ+phobia destroys human beings, and this novel/movie sends an important message that still resonates nowadays: no one should suffer for loving someone else, no one should feel guilty for who they are. We all need to feel accepted, we all need to feel supported, and we all need to feel loved without fear.

A little #ForestFloor vignette from yesterday afternoon. There is no fresh green here, yet, though Aspen and Willow catkins are bursting out and should soon be flowering, leaves and non-woody plants will follow..
Meantime #WildflowerWednesday #WildflowerHour will have to settle for the resilient leaves of Pink-flowered #Wintergreen Pyrola asarifolia against a backdrop of beautiful #lichen on a fallen bit of birch trunk. #LichenSubscribe #BorealForest #Alberta #Canada #spring #SolaceInNature

I hope frozen water counts for #WaterWednesday

An image from 2022 of the infamous Abraham Lake in #Alberta #Canada with its frozen methane bubbles trapped just below the surface.

The bubbles from my understanding are a result of organics buried in the lake bed after it was created by the nearby manmade dam. This place has unsurprisingly become a huge photo attraction as a result.

So now boards won't be able to reprimand or remove any a$$hats no matter what they say or do. The province can do it without any justification whatever though. I don't imagine that could lead to corruption (more) at all though.

#MonochromeMonday (I *took* the photos on the right day!).The earliest spot for me to see poplar catkins + one of few places with low branches is along the road allowance beside the acreage- sheltered southern exposure. This is next to where the neighbours' have #cows with/expecting #babies . #cute #curious #calves but #mommas are not trusting- trying to stay between me and babies- but the little ones come up to the fence to see what I'm doing
