Alexander de Grote bij Halikarnassos (1)
De stadsmuur van HalikarnassosIk ben een paar keer in Bodrum geweest, het antieke Halikarnassos. Er is een tof museum, waar onder meer het Uluburunwrak is te zien. De resten van het Mausoleum vallen wat tegen, maar hé, het gaat wel om een wereldwonder hè. De stad bezit verder een theater en een stadspoort uit de vierde eeuw v.Chr. Ik zou willen schrijven dat een bezoek de moeite waard is, maar die moeite bestaat uit een zo lange autorit dat je niet én alles kunt bekijken én heen en weer kunt rijden. Je bent gedwongen een hotel te nemen, en hoewel die in deze Turkse badplaats prima zijn, ben je al met al te veel tijd kwijt.
Halikarnassos, de hoofdstad van Karië, is echter wél de plek waar Alexander de Grote een nederlaag leed. Of beter: de behaalde tactische winst woog niet op tegen de geleden strategische schade.
Hoe zat het ook alweer? Alexander was de havensteden ten oosten van de Egeïsche Zee aan het veroveren om het voor de Perzen moeilijk te maken naar Griekenland of Macedonië te varen. Tot en met Milete was het zonder veel problemen gegaan, maar inmiddels was de Perzische vloot gearriveerd. In Halikarnassos zouden de Macedoniërs, die vanaf het land kwamen, het moeten opnemen tegen een garnizoen dat zich van overzee kon bevoorraden of simpelweg kon wegvaren als de situatie onhoudbaar werd.
Problemen
Alexanders belegering van Halikarnassos werd bovendien bemoeilijkt door het feit dat de stad was voorzien van recent aangelegde versterkingen, die volmaakt waren toegesneden op de belegeringsoorlog, bijvoorbeeld doordat op heuveltoppen torens met katapulten stonden. De zojuist genoemde stadpoort maakte deel uit van deze versterkingen. Het garnizoen bestond grotendeels uit huurlingen die commandant Memnon van Rhodos uit steden in Klein-Azië had overgebracht of geworven in Griekenland. Velen hadden zich gemeld als vrijwilliger om te vechten tegen de verwoester van Thebe. De Grieken waren zeer gemotiveerd.
De belegering van HalikarnassosHet moreel van de verdedigers en de hoogte van de muren vormden echter niet het belangrijkste obstakel. Als de wal eenmaal was genomen en de Macedonische soldaten stonden in de woonwijken, zou zich een nieuw probleem voordoen. De verdedigers waren gelegerd op een heuveltop, Salmakis, en op het zogeheten Koninklijke Eiland. Salmakis zou met een belegeringsdam en voldoende tijd kunnen worden veroverd, maar het eiland niet. Daarvoor moesten de Macedoniërs eerst de Perzische vloot verslaan, die beter en groter was.
Alexanders fout
De aanvallende partij was al met al zwaar in het nadeel. Alexander zou verliezen moeten incasseren en problemen hebben met de bevoorrading, terwijl de huurlingen hun eten dagelijks in de haven konden ophalen en zouden wegvaren als Memnon meende dat hij zijn vijanden lang genoeg had beziggehouden. Alexander begon dus aan het soort operatie dat elke generaal probeert te vermijden. Het was, simpelweg, een fout om de stad aan te vallen.
Eén zaak werkte in zijn voordeel: de Kariërs waren verdeeld. Satraap Pixodaros was kort daarvoor overleden en de heerschappij werd betwist door zijn zuster Ada, die het platteland beheerste, en de Pers Orontobates, die met Memnon leiding gaf aan de verdediging van Halikarnassos. Alexander verbond zich met Ada en benoemde haar tot satraap. Ze was de eerste niet-Macedoniër die hij in deze functie benoemde, en de enige vrouw. Hoewel de beheersing van het platteland de bevoorrading van de Macedonische troepen vereenvoudigde, moest Alexander zijn manschappen verdelen over de blokkade en de foerage. Hij had bij Halikarnassos dus niet de beschikking over zijn volledige leger.

Should you use OpenAI (or other closed-source) embeddings?
1. Try the lightest embedding model first
2. If it doesn’t work, try a beefier model and do a blind comparison
3. If you are already using a relatively large model, only then try some blind test against a proprietary model. If you really find it that the closed-source model is better for your application, then go for it.

Guidelines about accommodating people with disabilities are being scrubbed from the Justice departments website in an effort to … reduce the cost of groceries.
Once again disabled people are targeted because the government assumes no one will speak up for us.
