“Just last week in letters to the #Trump administration, I raised serious concerns about #transparency, #accountability, & the #humane treatment of detained individuals, particularly in light of repeated reports of #detainee #mistreatment & inadequate #MedicalCare,” US Sen #DickDurbin [D-IL], chair of the #Senate #Judiciary Cmte, tells WIRED.
Extremely important work! Congrats @sfchronicle
“For an immersive and revelatory series that exposed the soaring death toll tied to police pursuits and detailed the near-total immunity that shields officers who initiate deadly chases.”

DEA Ends Body Camera Program After Trump Executive Order — ProPublica

“part of what we're seeing now is something that looks like this, where the president's saying, I'm not a #lawyer, and where the #lawyers are saying, we just work for the #president. It's an effort […] on the part of both of these sets of individuals to deflect #accountability.”
The DEA Once Touted Body Cameras for Their “Enhanced Transparency.” Now the Agency Is Abandoning Them.
—
An internal email obtained by ProPublica said the agency made the change to be “consistent” with a Trump executive order. But at least two other federal law enforcement agencies are still requiring body cameras.

"This history shows that people opposed to discrimination, like feminists, cannot rely on the law alone. Too often the law is unstable. We need a new code of ethics, rooted in feminist principles, the “New Decorum.”"

So often we ask how others can be accountable without first looking internally and asking, "How have I been accountable?"

"It’s about asking yourself these questions:
What happened?
What was going on for me at the time?
What am I going to do about it?
We all want so badly to do it perfectly, to be people who will never mess up so that we would never have to be the ones who were wrong, we want people to apologize to us but we often struggle in being the ones who need to apologize."

“In any case, it is neither psychologically plausible nor managerially realistic to expect someone to follow orders 99 per cent of the time and then suddenly act independently on the hundredth instance.”

The problem that needs to be solved is that systems of #accountability and appellate process need to be baked into the code of social communications applications, but it seems that computer #programmers do not understand why these features are essential for responsible operations.
Unfortunately, the attitude of #FOSS #developers seems to be, "If you don't like it, code it yourself." This is not how advanced societies function or come about. Specialization and division of labor are important.
The #Fosstodon controversy is an excellent example of why the #decentralization of #Mastodon and the #Fediverse is not a panacea and not a substitute for #Justice.
As I have said on numerous occasions, what the world needs is broad agreement on comprehensive professional #moral, #ethical, #legal, and #procedural #standards for the operation of public private spaces that includes a firm commitment to #Equality and mechanisms for community and legal #accountability and an #appellate #process.
“Trump’s 100-day speech was a mix of lies and distortion—from falsely claiming gas prices dropped to $1.98 to inflating immigration stats. Meanwhile, @SenWarren exposed 100 acts of corruption under his watch. The truth won’t be silenced. #Resist #Accountability” www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn1F...
