WTF is Google doing now with its AI bullshit?!

Every search result for me now has a box of AI-generated garbage in the top position. Often it's wrong. Sometimes, it's directly contradicted by the second result.

To make matters worse, Google really, really, really doesn't want you to switch it off.
- Their online help on the topic is impenetrable, seemingly by design. Some links don't load.
- Posts by users on the official support/feedback page get a glib automated response and then locked so other people can't comment.
- Google's Help Centre says that you can access this ✨amazing✨ new feature only if you've signed-up for it (nope!)
- Their recommended process to switch it off relies on controls that aren't visible.
- If you go directly to the Search Labs website, it says you can't use it.

In the meantime, I've configured my adblocker plugins to block it.
And, I've tried "UDM=14" setting in the hope that it works. More info here: arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/0

I just Googled a term I didn’t know, and Google’s AI Overview informed me that the Second Coming of Christ is a tenet of Judaism.

I’m really worried that people are taking Google’s AI Overview at face value.
Here’s an example where I happen to have the background knowledge to tell me how wildly wrong this is. But I don’t have background knowledge about everything, and students have a lot less than I do.

From eating rocks to putting glue on pizza, Google’s AI Overviews has given us a good laugh and plenty of memes over the past week, thanks to the many hilariously inaccurate answers it has given to several search queries.

However, these clearly wrong answers are not the problem we should be focusing on, argues @FastCompany. “It’s the errors that don’t call attention to their ridiculous selves that could do the most damage to Google Search and everyone who relies on it.” Here’s more.

Welp, it's not just that #Google's #AIOverview is pulling false info and shitposts. They're also just scraping words without context and making lists. A number of the items listed are mentioned on the site as horrible ideas that you should not do. Yes, it should be obvious not to pee in you eye if you have conjunctivitis, but hey, a well respected hospital thinks I should so... 🤦
Anyone know if there's some way to report this and to where?
