A friend went to a crowded festival last weekend without a mask and is somehow surprised that they got #COVID again.
I am having difficulty being sympathetic about them having to cancel their plans to spend *this* weekend unmasked at crowded events too.
Just think, if enough people (starting with "any") behaved responsibly maybe *I* could go to an event or festival!
I'm organising a series of online public maths talks through Newcastle Uni's School of Maths, Stats and Physics, to be delivered by disabled presenters, taking place this December.
Talks can be any mathy topic, or about your experience as a disabled mathematician.
I need speakers: dm me if interested!
To paraphrase FDR; no company has a right to exist. It doesn't matter if it's prohibitively expensive to offer wheelchair transportation services.
I did a tree safety course a little while ago, and the instructor told the class that the legally required clearance for trees overhanging a public right-of-way was determined by: the height of a gentleman carrying a child sitting on his shoulders, where the child is wearing a top hat.

My lab (2019):
"You're better off in the placebo arm of an Alzheimer trial"
"Turns out all of Alzheimer research is actual fraud"
I realyl really want to change my name (again), because white people cannot spell or pronounce my name correctly (it's 3 fucking letters!) I picked a name prioritizing their collective inability to not realize they don't know a thing and misprouncing all but the mayo-ist of names, yet still they cannot cope. like the local very affirming pet store can cope, but medical professionals... not so much.
it would cost me $124. I know I'm already asknig for money right now but if anyone (specifically whites) wants to directly give me the 124bux, i'd be ever so grateful! (this is totally separate from the $750 i'm trynig to raise. that's for food, housing, etc, and this is to help give me peace of mind re: trans stuff and dealing with whites (who mispronounce my name in a gendered triggery whatever the term is very upsetting way))
Lilies Only Thread. If you are a Lily, please respond to this thread. (Other spellings invited too! Non-Lilies can boost!)
Please answer any or all of the following!
-Did you choose to be named Lily?
-What do you think about being named Lily?
-Do you like lilies (the flower)?
-Do you think you could beat the other Lilies in a knock-down brawl?
-What about a series of duels?
-What's your favourite colour?
-Do you have any tattoos?
-What weapon are you bringing to the duel tournament?
the only reason to query a person's use of language is if it's possible there's been a miscommunication or misunderstanding, and a kind question will do the job much better than criticism
if the communication is clear then it's not necessary to say anything at all unless comment has been explicitly requested
@FrazzledBrynn Mocking someone's language is always ableist, classist, racist, sexist, bigoted.
People say they're just Concerned about the language, some of them might mean it but it doesn't matter if they know it or not, it's still just a proxy for bigotry.
If anyone gives you shit about your language use you have my permission to tag me in and I'll tell them off with the power of a linguistics degree (which no one should care about but those kind of people do).
